A scout named Gull—a man whose superpower clearly involved enhanced speed—came sprinting back from the vanguard. His face was pale, his eyes wide with distress. "Villains! A large group, a dozen or more! They're cutting across the ridge to intercept us!"
"Damn it!" Lara cursed, her hand flying to the hilt of a short blade at her waist.
Thomas looked at Trevor. The department leader didn't hesitate. He looked like a man who had already made peace with a grim outcome.
"Go! Why are you wasting time staring at me?" Trevor roared, shoving Thomas and Lucy toward Lara. "Get out of here and don't look back! I'll lure the bulk of them toward the ravines. You take the low road to the tracks!"
