"Last time I came here, the place was filled with people," Thomas said, his voice echoing under the station's timber roof. "Do you think those two over by the gate belong to our team?"
He gestured toward two men in dark coats standing near the exit, but Lucy didn't even turn her head. She walked past him, her footsteps hollow and mechanical. She seemed to be staring right through the scenery.
"Never mind," Thomas muttered. He felt a strange role reversal; he was the one trying to fill the silence with nonsense, and she was the one who had checked out.
Thomas stood at the mouth of the main thoroughfare, the wind from the mountains chilling the sweat on his neck. He had intended to find the path to the Broken Ridges, the area Trevor had mentioned in his reports, but the words died in his throat.
