Chapter 14 - Chapter 13: The Ring of Sanctuary

The air in the Fourth Ring was different from the bustling energy of the trade districts or the militarized focus of the inner defenses. Known as the Ring of Sanctuary, this was Corintopia's heart of residence, a place of rest, shelter, and support. Here, inns and taverns lined the streets, welcoming both permanent citizens and weary travelers alike. The homes were modest but well-kept, and the people who lived within the ring carried a sense of community and stability.

But beneath the calm exterior, preparations were underway. Cormac, the monk who oversaw the Ring of Sanctuary, walked through the winding streets, his footsteps measured and deliberate. His presence exuded calm, a sense of peace that had earned him the respect of the people, but his mind was far from at ease.

The news of Tel-Nu's appearance had shaken even the most stoic members of the Core Seven, and Cormac was no exception. While his ring was primarily focused on providing shelter and support, he knew that they, too, would play a crucial role in the upcoming conflict. If the people lost hope, if the Sanctuary faltered, it would affect the entire city.

Cormac made his way through the streets, his gaze taking in the sights of the fourth ring, the bustling inns, the modest homes, the taverns where people gathered to share news and stories. It was a place of respite, but soon, it might be called upon to provide more than just shelter.

Arriving at his Temple Lodge, a place where the affairs of the fourth ring were managed, Cormac greeted a few of his attendants. The Lodge was simple yet elegant, built from stone and wood, its walls lined with tapestries depicting the balance of life and nature. Here, Cormac would begin his preparations, ensuring that the Ring of Sanctuary was ready to support Corintopia through whatever was to come.

Inside the Lodge, his aides were already waiting, their faces grim as they prepared for the meeting. Cormac sat at the head of the table, his expression calm but focused. He knew that this ring, above all others, had to remain stable. The people needed hope, and that hope could not falter in the face of the looming threat.

Cormac settled into his seat at the head of the table, his expression calm but unwavering. His aides were already gathered, their faces reflecting the seriousness of the situation. The Ring of Sanctuary had always been a place of rest, but now it would need to become a bastion of defense, capable of protecting the citizens during the coming storm.

One of his aides, Lana, a thoughtful and detail-oriented planner, began the meeting by presenting a series of maps and sketches that outlined the layout of the fourth ring. "Master Cormac," she said, spreading the papers across the table, "we've identified the key areas that need reinforcement. Our primary concern is fortifying the four gates at the cardinal points of the ring, north, south, east, and west. These gates are the most vulnerable access points."

Cormac nodded, his gaze sweeping over the maps. "The gates will need to be reinforced with additional barriers, and we'll need to ensure that the pathways leading to them are defensible. If Tel-Nu's forces breach the outer rings, this will be the last line of defense before the inner sanctum."

Another aide, Gareth, a practical and no-nonsense man, spoke up next. "We've also begun plans to build bunkers throughout the ring, strategically placed in each of the four quadrants. These bunkers will serve as shelters in the event of an attack, providing safe havens for both citizens and travelers. They'll be stocked with enough food, water, and medical supplies to sustain the population for an extended period."

Cormac leaned forward, studying the plans. "We'll need to ensure that these bunkers are well-hidden but easily accessible in times of need. Each quadrant must have multiple entry points, so no matter where people are, they can reach shelter quickly."

Lana nodded, making a note of his instructions. "We've also considered the layout of the ring itself, there are several natural choke points that we can use to our advantage. If the gates are breached, we'll guide people toward these bunkers while slowing down any advancing forces."

Gareth tapped the map in front of him, pointing to the four gates. "We'll reinforce each of these gates with heavy barriers, stone and steel. The builders are already gathering materials, and we've begun working on strengthening the gate mechanisms. If they try to break through, they'll have to fight for every inch."

Cormac's eyes narrowed slightly as he considered the next step. "It's not enough to simply build the bunkers and reinforce the gates. We'll need to make sure the supplies inside are constantly restocked. Food, water, and medical supplies won't be enough, we'll need fuel for heat, repair materials, and defensive equipment. If Tel-Nu strikes, we may be cut off from the other rings, and the fourth ring must be able to stand on its own."

Lana and Gareth exchanged glances, nodding in agreement. "We'll organize the supply chains and begin stockpiling immediately," Lana said. "We'll also reach out to the other rings to coordinate additional supplies. This will be a citywide effort."

Cormac sat back, his hands resting on the table as he surveyed the plans. "Good. We'll need every advantage we can get. Begin the fortifications immediately and make sure the builders understand the urgency. Tel-Nu is unlike anything we've faced before, and we need to be ready."

The room fell into a brief silence, each aide absorbing the gravity of the situation. Cormac knew that his ring, while not directly responsible for the city's military defense, would be crucial in maintaining the morale and survival of the citizens. If the Ring of Sanctuary fell, so too would the heart of Corintopia.

As the discussion about the fortifications began to settle, Cormac's mind turned to his own preparations. The plans for the fourth ring were solid, but he knew that the coming battle would require more than just defenses. He, too, needed to be ready, ready for a foe unlike any other.

He looked to his aides, his expression thoughtful but resolute. "There's another matter we need to address. Tel-Nu is no ordinary enemy. His power is... beyond anything I've encountered. If we're going to stand a chance, I need to be stronger. Much stronger."

Lana raised an eyebrow, her usual calm demeanor giving way to a slight hint of concern. "You're already one of the strongest among us, Master Cormac. What more do you think is needed?"

Cormac shook his head. "Tel-Nu is not someone who can be beaten with conventional strength alone. He wields power that defies reason. I've seen what he's capable of, and if I'm to protect this ring, if I'm to protect Corintopia, I need to push myself beyond my limits."

Gareth, ever the pragmatist, leaned forward slightly. "What do you suggest?"

"I'll need a training facility," Cormac said, his voice firm. "Somewhere isolated, where I can focus and push my abilities to their absolute peak. It can't be in the city proper, it needs to be a place where I can train uninterrupted, where I can test my limits without endangering anyone else."

Lana glanced at the map before her, considering his words. "We could repurpose one of the older sanctuaries on the outskirts of the fourth ring. There are several abandoned structures that could be reinforced and equipped with the necessary resources for your training."

Cormac nodded thoughtfully. "That could work. Make the arrangements. I'll need it outfitted with everything, from physical training equipment to facilities for meditation and focus. I'll need to train day and night if we're going to stand a chance against Tel-Nu."

"We'll begin immediately," Gareth said, jotting down notes. "I'll ensure that the facility is prepared as soon as possible."

Cormac rose from his seat, the weight of the preparations already settling heavily on his shoulders. His aides had their tasks, and now it was time for him to prepare himself mentally for what lay ahead.

"Inform me the moment the training facility is ready," Cormac said, his voice calm but firm. "Until then, I'll return to my lodge. I need to meditate and prepare for the training to come. Tel-Nu is not a threat to be taken lightly, and I will need every ounce of focus for what's ahead."

Lana and Gareth both nodded in understanding, rising as well. "We'll make sure everything is ready," Gareth assured him. "You'll be informed as soon as the facility is complete."

Cormac gave a final nod, then turned and made his way out of the Lodge. As he stepped back into the streets of the fourth ring, his thoughts were already turning inward. The challenges ahead would push him to his limits, but he had no choice but to face them. The survival of Corintopia depended on his strength, and on the strength of the Core Seven.

For now, he would return to his lodge, clear his mind, and prepare for what was to come.
