Chapter 5 - Warrior School

Kiyomaro

𝑊𝐻𝐴𝑇 𝑇𝐻𝐸 𝐻𝐸𝐿𝐿 𝑎𝑚 𝐼 𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑡?

Twin siblings Kiyomaro and Kino Kurosaki have left Leo Blackbriar—their new friend and party member -- back in Snapdragon Village and traveled to their respective schools.

 "No…more…I couldn't eat meow…another bite meow."

As I stand there, I'm trying to wrap my head around the fact that this beast-kin catgirl who's asleep on top of a desk; is wearing nothing but a black bra and matching panties.

I decide she's not my problem and begin exploring the building I'm in, which doesn't take me very long. The only thing of note—besides the scantily dressed catgirl is the bookcase.

Perusing the titles I realized something.

𝐴𝑙𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑠𝑒 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑤𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑛 𝑏𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑎𝑚𝑒 𝑎𝑢𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑟, 𝑆.𝐼. 𝐼𝑡 𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘𝑠 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑟𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑚 𝑖𝑛 𝑎𝑙𝑙. 𝑆𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑠𝑒 𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑐𝑎𝑚𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑘 ℎ𝑜𝑚𝑒.

"Oh, yellow tail that looks purrfect, maybe one more bite."

𝐼 𝑔𝑢𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝐼 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑤𝑎𝑘𝑒 ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑢𝑝.

Just as Kiyo thinks this, something lands on his head. Kiyo turns back towards the desk only to find that the catgirl is now completely nude, lying on her back, legs splayed out, giving Kiyo an eye full of her goodies. The thing that landed on him was her panties.

𝑂𝑓 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠𝑒 𝑠ℎ𝑒'𝑠 𝑛𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑑. 𝐴𝑛𝑑 𝑓𝑖𝑣𝑒. 𝐹𝑜𝑢𝑟. 𝑇ℎ𝑟𝑒𝑒. 𝑇𝑤𝑜…

"Mmm, that was a good cat nap." The catgirl sits up and stretches.

 𝑅𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑛 𝑐𝑢𝑒.

"I wonder what time… ?!" She blinks a few times.

 "Finally notice, did you?"

"Can I have me-ow panties back?"

"All yours." I hand them over.

 "Thank mew."

"Are you not embarrassed about me seeing you naked?"

"Why would I be? Mew-dity is a natural state of all beings." The catgirl gets herself dressed in dark green leather bikini armor and then takes a seat behind the desk.

"My name is Brittney. And If mew couldn't tell, I'm a beast-kin calico cat."

Brittney is one point sixty-five meters tall. Her ears and tail are a combination of white, orange, and black and she has greenish grey eyes. A dark wheat skin tone that offsets her short white hair.

"I also have a very bad habit of falling asleep whenever the sun shines through the window and at some point I also end up naked as mew already saw. So any questions?"

"What exactly is your job? Other than sleeping in the nude."

"Right meow my job is both gate monitor and enrollment specialist."

"Gate monitor? How can you monitor anything when you're asleep? I'm surprised they let you keep the job."

"It's just a part-time gig I do on the side. I'm actually an adventurer."

"Still. You should take the job more seriously."

"Whatever you say meow-ster." Brittney salutes Kiyo.

"What does an enrollment specialist do?"

"I help new students get registered. Assist with any financial aid. Assign them rooms, hand out a welcome packet; which includes a copy of the school rules, and a copy of the subclasses taught here. There's also a map of the school grounds to help you navigate."

"What is needed from me for registration?"

"Just like mew did at the adventures guild, mew'll place your hand on this Red Mirror and leave it there until I ask mew to remove it."

"What's the difference between the Black Mirror and this one?"

"Not meowch, but there are a few differences: the Red Mirror is only used here at the school. No one outside of school staff can access it. The Red Mirror can send updates to the Black Mirror like if mew successfully complete a subclass or if mew fail at something."

"I see. Before I touch the mirror, would you mind cleaning it off? There's a puddle of something on it."

"!?" Brittney's face turns bright red from embarrassment as she starts wiping off the entire desk.

"Sorry about that. Nyow please purr-ceed."

 I do as instructed. "Huh?"

 "What's wrong?" Brittney asks.

"It's my skills. I can actually see them listed."

"Mew should have been able to view them at any time."

"I couldn't for some reason. Even when I opened my status display."

"Well, mew can now. Done. Here's mew're room key, room 301, third floor in building A." Brittney hands me the key.

"Probably should've asked this sooner, but what about the cost of attending the school?"

"Those who're not ranked have their fees covered by the empire until they reach D-rank. Then the cost changes based on rank."

 "What do the fees cover?"

"Room and board. Textbooks. Laundry service. Mew're main classes."

 "What about subclasses?"

"Mew pay for them mew-self. After making D-rank."

"What's it cost for someone who's SS-ranked, like myself?"

Brittney tilts her head in confusion, she looks down at the Red Mirror. "How are mew SS-ranked?"

 "I'm from another world."

 "Ameowzing!"

 "So, about the cost?"

"It's noted in mew're file that Head Guild Meow-ster Nelliel has paid mew're fees."

 "Seriously! Why?"

 "It doesn't say." Responds Brittney.

𝐼'𝑙𝑙 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑎𝑠𝑘 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑥𝑡 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝐼 𝑠𝑒𝑒 ℎ𝑒𝑟.

"Can I help mew with anything else?"

"What happens if you can't make D-rank?"

"Why would mew need to know that?"

 "Just outta curiosity."

"Mew have one year to make rank. If mew cannot then mew either leave the school or get a job to cover expenses. Mew can also get a benefactor, but if mew show no improvement after six months then mew'll be asked to leave."

"Am I free to come and go as I please, or am I confined to stay at the school?"

"Mew are free to come and go, but if mew stay at the school then mew'll have a purr-few."

"Good to know. So what comes next?"

"Head out that door behind you and go through the courtyard until you see a trail sign. Follow the trail up the hill until you see the school's training grounds. The Headmeow-ster is out there."

 "Thank you Brittney."

 "Mew're welcome."

****

 "Alright, who's next?"

 "I am."

 "Very well."

 "Ryo, are you ready?"

 "Yes Headmaster."

 "Matsuri, are you ready?"

 "Yes Headmaster."

"Now remember this is only a practice match, but you still can get hurt so be safe. I'll stop the match if need be, is that understood?"

Yes Headmaster is the response given by both combatants.

 "Begin!"

As the two begin, Kiyo watches on from a top a hill that overlooks everything. Before him is a massive training ground that stretches out far and wide.

Fighters of all ages, gender, and races are honing their skills with a variety of weapons. They all are pushing one another to the breaking point, and then pushing even further still.

𝑇ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑏𝑒 𝑓𝑢𝑛. Thinks Kiyo as he makes his way down.

"Match over. Ryo is the winner." announces the headmaster.

"Any time you want a rematch Matsuri let me know. Now is there anyone else who wants to challenge me?" Ryo loudly calls out.

"I'll face you." I said, from the sidelines.

"I don't recognize you. Are you new here?"

 "Yes. Just got here today."

"Alright I, Ryo Takashi, accept your challenge, but you should know I'm the top A-ranked at this school. Not even A-ranked instructors can hold their own against me.

The protective gear Ryo is wearing is the standard uniform worn by students participating in physical contact drills. Made from durable cotton the gambeson has an open armpit design, allowing for great mobility.

Just like the gambeson, the sparring overalls are also made from durable cotton. Adjustable straps help hold the pants in place, while straps at the waste help with adjusting the fit.

"Because this is practice only. Kiyo, I would like you to grab one of the practice swords from the rack. Pick one that best suits you."

 "Understood."

"Matsuri, would you please look after Kiyo's swords for him?"

 "Yes Headmaster."

I hand over my swords over to the blue haired boy instead of placing them into my inventory. If I did use my inventory, the black hole looking thing that appears could cause a panic.

Looking the rack over, I spot an all too familiar weapon. Picking it, I move to stand before Ryo.

"Did you really just pick that toothpick as your weapon?"

"Only because I didn't see a pen lying around."

"Huh?! Why would you use something that houses farm animals?"

 "It's an idiom."

"Did you just call me an idiot?!" Shouts Ryo.

"Never mind. Let's just start the match."

"All right, Kiyomaro, are you ready?"

I take a Jōdan-no-kamae stance, my shinai raised above my head.

Jōdan-no-kamae: is one of five stances in kendo. Traditionally known as the "Stance of Fire," it is a highly aggressive, high-level guard where the practitioner raises the shinai (bamboo sword) above their head before striking.

 "Yes, headmaster, I'm ready."

 "Ryo, are you ready?"

 "Yes headmaster."

 "Begin!"

"No way." Matsuri mumbles, shocked at what he just witnessed.

"What's up Matsuri?" asked a pink haired girl.

"Oh hey Lucy, I just saw Ryo lose his first fight."

 "What?! Who beat him?"

"Someone named Kiyomaro, and get this, he's claiming to be SS-ranked."

"If he beat Ryo then it must be true." Lucy points out.

 "But why is he here?"

 "Let's ask him later."

"Match over. Kiyomaro is the winner." announces the headmaster.

"You cheated didn't you?" Ryo proclaimed angrily.

 "Nope."

"I say you did, and your gear is enchanted. I demand you remove your gear at once, and fight me again wearing the practice gear we all have on."

"How about I fight you in my boxers instead."

I start stripping right there in front of everyone.

"Wait! Hold on, you don't have to go that far Kiyo." Shouts the headmaster.

"It's fine, headmaster. This way I cannot be accused of cheating."

"You're gonna want the protective gear. I don't want to hear you crying for me to stop once we begin." Ryo said with an arrogant tone.

"No need. I'll end this quickly."

Headmaster Brett just sighs, "Alright fine, the same rules still apply. Now are both of you ready?"

Both fighters answer in unison that they are ready.

 "Begin!"

The match ends the same as before with Kiyo as the victor.

"So you're the one Nelliel informed me of."

"So you knew who I was all along, headmaster?"

"Nelliel only said a new SS-ranked student would be joining us, and they could be male or female. It wasn't until you showed up that I figured it out. Though I am curious about how you're top ranked."

"Hold on minute headmaster." Ryo demands. "If you knew who he was then why let us fight?"

"Well Ryo for two reasons. The first being able to see this young man's skills which I must say are very impressive."

"Thank you headmaster." I give him a slight nod.

"What's the second reason?" Asks Ryo.

"You needed to lose Ryo in order to grow."

"What! That's utter bullshit!" Yells Ryo.

"You've never lost a fight, and because of this you don't know how to handle a defeat." Brett explains. "You are the top A-ranked student and a prodigy with the blade, there's no disputing that. However, losing a fight here at the school is a lot safer than losing a fight on a quest."

"So you had me fight Ryo all in order for him to learn how to handle a loss and grow from it."

"Yes, that is correct Kiyo. So going forward will you help him out?"

"Sure that won't be a problem, headmaster."

 "Thank you Kiyo."

"Hold on dammit!" Screamed Ryo. "I made it this far on my own, and I'll reach the very top on my own. I don't need this bastard's help."

"That's enough Ryo!" Yells the headmaster. "Look at how you're acting right now after losing two practice matches.

If you think you don't need the help of others in order to grow not just as a warrior, but as a person then I have failed you as the headmaster, along with all the other instructors of this school.

So take the rest of the day off from training and reflect on your actions just now."

"Fine with me!" Ryo yells back and storms off.

"Hey Kiyo, can I ask you something?" This question comes from Lucy as she walks up to Kiyo with Matsuri right beside her.

 "What's up?"

 "Can you help me train?"

"Sure, but are you a swordsman?"

"Yes. Oh and my name is Lucy. It's nice to meet you."

"It's nice to meet you, Lucy. What about you um… Matsuri, right?"

"Correct and yes I would also like to train with you."

 "Okay."

Matsuri hands Onyx and Snow back to me.

"Inventory." A black hole looking thing appears beside me. I place the Twin Blades inside. No point in having them on me during practice. The black hole automatically closes.

"What the hell was that?!" Lucy asked.

 "It's my unique item bag."

 "Are you also a spatiomancer?"

 "No. I'm an otherworlder.

"Alright. First let me see what you two can do."

"Kiyo, I'll leave these two with you." Said the headmaster. "I have others to look after."

"Understood sir, you can count on me."

"Lucy, Matsuri, train with Kiyo until lunch time. Then show him around the place." The headmaster instructs them.

 ""Yes, sir.""

"Before we begin, can I ask you guys something?"

"Only if you get dressed first." Said Lucy.

As I'm putting my pants on I ask, "if Ryo is A-ranked, why is he still here?"

"Believe it or not but Ryo has only been here a month." Answered Matsuri.

"He jumped from a no rank to the top spot among the A-ranks like it was nothing. Only one other person has done that in the history of the school." Explained Lucy.

"Who was the first?" I asked.

"The Rapier Princess Fuchi is all that's written. No surname is given."

"That is standard practice for those of nobility." Said Matsuri.

"Or if you're filthy rich." Adds Lucy.

"I see. That was very informative, thank you both. Now let's start practicing."
