Dean Zhu had already decided to abandon Director Mi. If he couldn't sacrifice the pawns to save the king, it's likely both the pawns and the king would perish together, and he wasn't that foolish.
Even though he was very cautious of Director Mi's backing, it was just a matter of precaution. To say he was afraid or panicked was out of the question.
At most, he just maintained a conservative attitude, turning a blind eye to things.
With his imminent promotion, he was even less willing to stir up any trouble.
