Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 | THE MAN SHE THOUGHT WOULD PROTECT HER |

For a long time, the little girl believed her stepfather was one of the safest people in her new world.

She hadn't entered her mother's home expecting to dislike him. In fact, she wanted him to accept her. She wanted to feel that she belonged in the family.

And, at first, he made that easy.

Whenever her mother became angry with her, he sometimes stepped in.

"She's still a child."

"Let her be."

"She didn't mean to do it."

The little girl would stand quietly nearby, listening.

Sometimes she would look at him with gratitude.

She didn't have the words to explain what his defense meant to her.

But inside, she would think:

He understands me.

Her mother was the person she loved most, but she sometimes felt that her mother didn't understand her.

Her stepfather seemed different.

If her mother misunderstood something she had done, he would sometimes explain her side.

If she was being blamed unfairly, he would speak up.

Those moments stayed with her.

She began to feel that perhaps she had finally found another adult who was on her side.

She even started thinking something she would never have imagined before:

Maybe he loves me more than Mama does.

It wasn't because she loved her mother less.

It was because children measure love through what they can see.

And what she could see was a man defending her.

That was enough for her young heart to trust him.

She became comfortable around him.

She didn't feel the need to hide whenever he entered a room.

She could talk.

She could laugh.

She could be herself.

She had already experienced things she couldn't explain, including the secret she still carried about her cousin.

So having someone she believed would stand up for her felt important.

She thought that if anything ever happened, he would protect her.

That belief made her vulnerable.

She didn't know it then.

She was only a child trying to understand where she belonged.

Sometimes she would watch her mother and stepfather together.

She was learning what family looked like.

It wasn't always peaceful.

There were disagreements.

There were moments when voices became louder.

But whenever her stepfather defended her, she felt reassured.

She thought she had someone.

Someone who saw her.

Someone who would speak for her.

Someone who wouldn't allow the world to hurt her.

And because she had already begun learning that love could disappear, she held onto every little sign of affection.

She didn't know that one day those memories would become painful.

There were still beautiful moments in her childhood.

Her mother returning from travels with toys.

Her younger siblings laughing.

Grandma's voice.

The simple comfort of sitting beside someone she loved.

Her life wasn't one long nightmare.

That was important.

There were moments of happiness scattered between the pain.

And perhaps those moments were what kept her heart soft for so long.

She still believed people could be good.

She still believed love could protect you.

She still believed that when someone said they loved you, they meant it.

Especially him.

Her stepfather.

The man she had quietly placed in the role of protector.

But children don't always know that trust has to be earned over time.

Sometimes they give it freely.

She had given him hers.

Completely.

And that trust would later become one of the most painful things she would ever lose.

Because the person she thought would stand between her and danger would eventually become part of the danger.

The realization would not come all at once.

It would come slowly.

Through moments she would struggle to understand.

Through confusion.

Through fear.

Through betrayal.

And when she finally understood what had happened, she would remember the little girl she once was—the girl who looked at him and thought:

"He loves me. He will protect me."

She would remember that girl.

And she would mourn her.

Because sometimes the darkest betrayal isn't discovering that someone was never good.

It's discovering that the person you trusted most was capable of becoming someone you feared.

And she wasn't ready for that truth yet.
