Chapter 30 - MY MOTHER HELD A GUN

I couldn't breathe.

I stared at the photograph.

My mother.

Holding a gun.

Standing behind my father.

Behind Malik.

Behind Adrian.

Behind Daniel.

And me.

A little girl who had no idea that the people around her were carrying secrets that would eventually destroy her life.

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

"This isn't real."

My voice trembled.

My mother stepped toward me.

"Lina…"

"Don't."

She stopped.

"Don't come near me."

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"You don't understand what happened."

"Then explain it!"

My voice echoed through the underground room.

"You had a gun!"

"Yes."

"You were standing behind Dad!"

"Yes."

"You were there when everything happened!"

"Yes."

My heart cracked.

"Did you kill him?"

She closed her eyes.

I waited.

One second.

Two.

Three.

"Mom?"

She finally opened her eyes.

"No."

I shook my head.

"You're lying."

"I didn't kill Samuel."

"Then why were you holding a gun?"

"Because I was trying to save him."

I laughed bitterly.

"Save him?"

"Yes."

She walked closer.

"I arrived after Richard found him. Samuel was already injured."

"Then who shot him?"

She looked at the photograph.

"I don't know."

I stared at her.

"You don't know?"

"No."

"Then why does this picture exist?"

"Because someone wanted you to believe I killed your father."

Adrian suddenly took the photograph from my hand.

He examined it carefully.

"There's something wrong."

"What?"

He pointed to the bottom corner.

"This picture was altered."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"Look at the shadows."

Daniel stepped closer.

"The shadows don't match."

Adrian nodded.

"Exactly."

My mother looked relieved.

"I told you."

But Malik wasn't looking at the photograph.

He was staring at the wall.

"Lina."

I turned.

"What?"

He pointed toward another photograph.

"That's not the night Samuel died."

I walked toward him.

"How do you know?"

"Because I was there."

He pointed at the background.

"That building didn't exist when Samuel died."

My heart raced.

"So someone changed the photograph."

"Yes."

Adrian turned it over.

There was a date written on the back.

THREE DAYS BEFORE SAMUEL'S DEATH.

I stared at it.

"Then someone deliberately created this."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"To make you distrust your mother."

My mother started crying.

"I knew one day you'd find this."

I turned toward her.

"Then tell me the truth."

She nodded.

"I will."

She sat down slowly.

"Samuel discovered Richard was using our family to move money and information. He wanted to expose him."

She wiped her tears.

"Richard found out."

"What happened?"

"Samuel told me to take you and leave."

"And you didn't?"

"I tried."

Her voice broke.

"Richard's men found us."

I felt my throat tighten.

"What happened to Dad?"

"He stayed behind so we could escape."

I looked at Malik.

"Where were you?"

Malik's eyes dropped.

"Your father asked me to protect you."

"You failed."

He flinched.

"I know."

"Where were you?"

"I was taking you to safety."

"And Daniel?"

Daniel looked down.

"I was with Richard."

My eyes widened.

"You were working for him?"

"Not willingly."

"You were a child too."

"Yes."

He swallowed.

"I thought he was helping your family."

I turned back to my mother.

"Then who shot Dad?"

She looked at me.

"Richard."

Silence.

"But Daniel was blamed."

"Yes."

"And everyone believed Daniel killed him."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Richard made sure the evidence pointed to him."

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"He destroyed my life."

I looked at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I tried."

"When?"

"The night you remembered me."

My heart tightened.

"You said, 'I told you I would find you.'"

"Yes."

"What did you want me to remember?"

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small folded paper.

"I found this after Samuel died."

He handed it to me.

I unfolded it.

My father's handwriting.

Daniel,

If anything happens to me, protect Lina. Don't let Richard find her.

My eyes filled with tears.

Daniel continued.

"I failed him."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You were manipulated."

"I still pulled the trigger on the wrong man."

"You didn't know."

"I should have."

I looked at Malik.

"And you?"

He stared at me.

"Your father gave me one job."

"What?"

"Make sure you survived."

"You did."

"I thought I had."

I looked down.

"Until now."

Suddenly, a loud metallic sound echoed through the room.

CLANG.

Everyone froze.

Adrian reached for his weapon.

"Someone's coming."

My mother stood.

"No."

"What?"

She looked terrified.

"He knows."

"Who?"

"Richard."

The lights flickered.

Then went completely dark.

I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Coming down the stairs.

Malik moved in front of me.

Daniel stood beside him.

Adrian raised his weapon.

Then a man's voice echoed through the darkness.

"You finally found it."

My blood ran cold.

Richard.

The lights came back on.

He stood at the bottom of the stairs.

But he wasn't alone.

A man stood beside him.

Tall.

Scar across his neck.

Victor.

I stared at him.

The same man who had saved me.

The same man who had given me the key.

Richard smiled.

"You should never have opened that door."

I tightened my grip on the photograph.

"You've been lying to me my whole life."

Richard looked at my mother.

"She started it."

My mother shook her head.

"No."

Richard raised his gun.

"Then let's finally tell Lina who really pulled the trigger."

He pointed directly at my mother.

And before anyone could move, Victor whispered:

"Richard… you promised you wouldn't kill her."

Richard smiled.

"I changed my mind."

Then he pulled the trigger.
