Charles stared intently into the periscope at the object—it was a human skeleton.
The dead didn't scare Charles. He was more concerned with how this thing had gotten here and what its purpose was.
After three seconds, the figure suddenly flickered and vanished, plunging the periscope's view back into darkness.
Charles immediately released the periscope and headed for the cockpit door.
"Captain, where are you going?" Deep hurried after him.
"Going out to meet this fellow. You're coming with me."
GLUG... A trail of bubbles rose from the seawater as Charles followed Deep into the pitch-black depths.
The frigid seawater sent a shudder through Charles's body. The water felt colder than freezing.
Charles's night vision seemed suppressed here; he could only see for about ten meters around him.
Pushing off the hard hull with one hand, Charles swam to the periscope's external lens. He saw that the thing he had just spotted hadn't left; it was still drifting slowly in the water.
