Charles was utterly surprised. Lily had been beside him for so long, yet this was the first time she had asked for a salary.
"Whenever you needed to buy something before, didn't you just drag me along to buy it?"
With drooping ears, Lily began to pour out her heart to Charles. It turned out she had seen James's wife distributing stale bread to the pitiable refugees of Shadow Island and wanted to do the same.
"Mr. Charles, let's help them. They are so pitiful. I saw some of them were so hungry they rummaged through trash heaps for things even rats wouldn't eat, just to fill their stomachs. It's heartbreaking," Lily pleaded, tugging at Charles's fingers and swaying them coaxingly.
"There are so many of them. Do you think you can help them all?"
"Well... even helping one person is better than none. Being hungry is truly unbearable. Besides, Char told me there have been a lot more dead bodies in the sewers lately."
