Chapter 5 - ice collection

Love)

"I'm telling you, Finn, the air is too still."

We were trekking through the Ice Kingdom again. My Elemental Attunement was picking up a massive concentration of ice

"Relax, Kael! We're just here to find the missing princesses," Finn said, hacking through a snowbank with his sword.

Suddenly, a giant, translucent blue hand swiped down from the sky. It was a "Frigid Grip" spell. Finn and Jake were snatched up before they could blink. I saw it coming—the air had rippled three seconds prior—and I slid to the left, my boots gliding over the ice like skates.

"Kael! Help!" Finn yelled as the giant hand carried them toward the Ice Castle.

I didn't rush. I knew the Ice King. He didn't want to kill them; he wanted an audience. I followed at a distance, using my Accelerated Learning to study the magical residue the hand left behind. It wasn't just ice magic; it was held together by a thin lattice of sorrow-based energy.

The Dungeon

By the time I broke into the castle, Finn, Jake, and six different princesses were locked in a massive, anti-magic birdcage. The Ice King was sitting in front of them, playing a pan-flute and telling a very long, very boring story about a turtle.

"And then the turtle said, 'That's not my briefcase!'" the Ice King laughed manically. No one else laughed.

I stepped out of the shadows. "You missed the punchline, Ice King."

"You again!" The Ice King jumped up, dropping his flute. "The un-freezable boy! Why are you in my hobby room? This is private time for me and my best friends who are definitely here by choice!"

"Kael, get us out of here!" Finn shouted, rattling the bars. "These bars are enchanted! I can't break them!"

The Ice King fired a "Freeze Ray" at me. I didn't dodge. I let the beam hit my chest. My Elemental Resistance absorbed the cold, but this time, I tried something new. I used my Elemental Attunement to "listen" to the spell as it hit me.

It's just vibrating water, I realized. If I can change the vibration, I can change the state of the matter.

I walked right up to the cage. The Ice King was panicking, firing bolt after bolt of blue lightning at me. I walked through the storm, the electricity dancing off my skin like harmless sparks. My resistance was holding, but I could feel my energy draining. I had to be fast.

"Stop it! Why won't you fall down?!" the Ice King screamed.

I ignored him and placed my hands on the enchanted bars. I closed my eyes, focusing on the "Ice" element within the metal. I visualized the molecules slowing down, then suddenly speeding up.

"Accelerated friction," I whispered.

The bars under my hands didn't break—they sublimated. They turned directly from solid ice into harmless steam.

"What?! My cage!" the Ice King wailed.

Finn didn't hesitate. He backflipped out of the opening and tackled the Ice King, while Jake grew ten times his size and sat on the old wizard.

"Nice work, Kael!" Finn cheered, helping the princesses out. "You just turned magic into... air? How?"

"I just asked the molecules to move a little faster," I said, wiping sweat from my forehead. That had taken a lot out of me. Learning a pattern was one thing; forcing it to change was another.

As we led the princesses back to their kingdoms, the Ice King watched us from his balcony, crying big, frozen tears.

"You're a party pooper, Kael!" he yelled. "I just wanted a sleepover!"

Finn looked back, a bit of pity in his eyes, but then he looked at me and smiled. "We'll have our own sleepover at the Tree House, bro. With way less kidnapping."

"And more meatman sandwiches," I added.

"Mathematical!"

I looked back at the Ice Kingdom. I had learned how to manipulate ice today without a crown. If I kept learning at this rate, I wouldn't just be Finn's shield I'd be the most powerful force in Ooo. And with the shadows I felt looming in the distance, I knew I'd need to be.
