(Almera POV)
I was awakened long before dawn.
Not by urgency.
Not by alarm.
By smiles.
Soft voices filled my chambers, layered and careful, the kind used when one must appear joyful while delivering something unavoidable. Curtains were drawn back before I could even sit up, pale morning light spilling across silk sheets and gilded pillars.
Attendants lined the room—far more than necessary.
"Your Grace," one said brightly, bowing low. "You are honored today."
The word settled strangely in my chest.
Honored.
Another attendant stepped forward, holding a tray with ceremonial garments already laid out—layers of fine fabric meant not for comfort, but for display.
"You have been scheduled for additional observances," she continued. "As befits one who enjoys His Majesty's favor."
I pushed myself upright, the ache in my body from the previous nights flaring faintly. I kept my expression composed, my voice even.
"Additional observances?" I asked.
