Chapter 2 - The PSA

Eric's chest heaved beneath his battle-worn armor, his deep, rhythmic breaths fogging the interior visor of his mask. It wasn't just any gas mask, it was the industrial-grade N890, built with high-density carbon filters capable of trapping volatile particles down to the molecular scale of methane, hydrogen sulfide, and ammonia. Through its reinforced glass, the world was a dull, sulfurous gray.

He peered out from the shattered sixth-floor window of his personal penthouse refuge. Below him, the streets of his makeshift sanctuary were completely choked. Thousands of decaying corpses pressed together, packed shoulder-to-shoulder, a writhing, desperate sea of rotting meat stretching as far as the eye could see. The stench outside was a biological weapon in itself, but the N890 filtered it down to crisp, fresh air.

Inside his gut, a different kind of fire burned, hunger. His rations had run out two days ago.

The last dried piece of jerky was a distant memory, and his body, now built like an absolute brick house, demanded fuel. Over two brutal months of isolation, relentless conditioning, and raw fury, Eric had transformed. He was no longer the scrawny teenager who watched his father die.

Standing at 6'2, broad-shouldered, and packed with dense, functional muscle, he looked like a brick wall clad in Kevlar and steel. Yet beneath that massive frame lay a terrifying, predatory agility.

He needed food. He needed to clear a path. And he was out of patience.

"Time to clean the streets," Eric growled, his voice rasping through the mask's vocal diaphragm.

He didn't search for a fire escape. He didn't look for a quiet route. Eric simply backed up into the dark living room, adjusted the twin scabbards strapped diagonally across his massive back, and flexed his legs. He sprinted forward, his combat boots thundering against the floorboards, and launched his heavy frame straight out of the 6th-floor window!

Glass shattered into a halo of diamond shards as he sailed through the empty air.

Falling through the sky, Eric ignited his prototype fire propellers, custom thrusters mounted to his gauntlets and lower back. Twin jets of roaring blue flame burst forth with a deafening screech, counteracting all that brutal pull of gravity just 30 something feet above the hoard.

The intense thermal blast incinerated the top layer of the mob instantly, turning dozens of undead skulls into bursting, calcified cinders before his boots even touched the ground.

BOOM.

Eric hit the asphalt in a 3-point landing that cracked the concrete beneath him. The kinetic shockwave, backed by a wide-angle burst from his fire thrusters, blew back a ring of fifty zombies, roasting their rotten flesh until the air shimmered with heat.

Before the surrounding undead could register his presence, Eric moved. For a man of his immense size, his speed was unnatural, a blurring hurricane of black armor and flashed steel.

SCHWING!

The twin katanas cleared their sheaths in a single fluid motion. Eric spun on his heel, his heavy torso twisting with explosive force. The long, curved blades whistled through the air, shearing through three zombie necks at once. Black, viscous blood sprayed across his chest plate, but he was already moving forward.

A massive, mutated infected lunged at his throat, its jaw unhinged to taste his brain. Eric ducked beneath the snapping teeth with fluid grace, drove his left shoulder into the creature's chest, shattering its ribs with sheer momentum, and brought his right katana upward in a brutal rising slash. The razor-sharp edge split the monster from its pelvis straight up through its skull, carving down to the very bone before it could even shriek.

"Fu(k you! Next!" he roared, rolling forward beneath a grabbing hand, igniting a half-second burst from his hand-propeller to launch himself into a dense cluster.

He was a whirlwind of rhythmic death. Step, slash, thrust, ignite. A zombie lunged from his blind spot, Eric caught it by the throat with a ironclad hand, slammed its face into the pavement, and planted a boot on its spine while his swords cut down three more coming from his left.

He didn't just fight, he dissected them. The katanas bit through rot, cartilage, and spine with terrifying precision, leaving a path of severed limbs and burning, twitching torsos in his wake.

He carved a bloody, scorched trench fifty yards down the street, pushing straight toward the glass doors of the neighborhood supermarket.

Reaching the entrance, Eric delivered a sidekick that blew the heavy steel doors clean off their hinges, flattening a pair of stragglers inside. He rushed into the dark, ransacked aisles.

The air here was heavy with the stench of decay, but the N890 mask neutralized it completely. He scanned the broken shelves with hyper-focused intensity. Most of the fresh produce had turned to black sludge weeks ago, but near the back loading dock, his eyes locked onto a sealed, wooden crate.

He smashed the crate open with a single fist. Jackpot.

Inside were high-calorie military MREs, sealed gallon jugs of purified water, and dense cans of salted meat, the absolute last usable food supply before the entire store's inventory rotted into toxic waste. Eric grabbed a heavy tactical duffel, stuffing it to the brim with ruthless efficiency. Thirty seconds. That's all he gave himself.

Outside, the horde was already closing in on the entrance, attracted by the noise.

"Out of my way!"

Eric slung the massive duffel over his back, ignited his fire propellers to maximum thrust, and charged the doorway like a runaway freight train.

He burst through the glass in a blinding cloud of fire and smoke, his katanas working like twin helicopter blades. He sliced, parried, and crushed every ghoul that dared step into his path, leaving a trail of dismembered bodies burning in the street as he sprinted full-tilt back toward his apartment complex.

Reaching his building's reinforced base, he activated his arm thrusters, boosting himself up to the second-floor fire escape in a single jump, leaving the clawing mob frustrated on the pavement below. He scrambled up the ladder, climbed back through his shattered sixth-floor window, and slammed the heavy iron barricade shut.

Silence fell over the apartment.

Eric stood there in the dim light, his chest heaving, covered from head to toe in black blood and ash.

He unclasped the N890 mask, letting it hang around his neck, and slumped against the wall. The adrenaline faded, leaving behind the crushing weight of brutal, maddening isolation. The physical strength meant nothing. The food meant nothing. He was alive, but he was utterly, completely alone.

Frustration exploded out of him. Tears of rage and exhaustion blurred his vision.

"Damn it!" he screamed, pulling back his massive fist and driving it straight into the concrete wall with all his strength.

THWACK!

His knuckles smashed through the plaster, impacting a tangle of hidden copper wires and an old, dust-covered emergency ham radio unit mounted on the wall stud. The heavy blow sent a sudden, desperate jolt of kinetic energy and crossed-wire electricity directly into the unit's dormant transmitter.

Eric pulled his bloody hand back, leaning his forehead against the wall as heavy tears escaped his eyes, dripping onto his chest plate.

Then, a harsh static hiss cut through the quiet room.

KZZZZZT...

Eric froze. His breath hitched in his throat.

KZZZZT... "This is an automated emergency broadcast on all open military frequencies..." a synthesized voice crackled through the static-filled speaker.

Eric slowly lifted his head, his eyes widening as he stared at the glowing green light of the transmitter.

"...An evacuation effort is underway for surviving personnel near Sector 7. Repeat. To any remaining survivors near the city limits, a high-capacity military transport unit will execute a single pick-up protocol in precisely 3 days, 17 hours, and 34 minutes from the time of this broadcast."

The voice static flared, then stabilized.

"Landing zone is designated at the rooftop helipad of Nanjeng Tower. The transport WILL NOT hold for more than 3minutes after touchdown due to severe atmospheric viral density. Prepare accordingly. Out."

The static returned, humming softly in the quiet apartment.

3 days. 17 hours. 34 minutes.

Eric stared at his hand, bruised and bleeding at the knuckles. A slow, trembling laugh bubbled up from his chest, cutting through the agony that had consumed him for two endless months. He didn't just survive for nothing. The world hadn't completely ended.

"Thank you..." he whispered, wiping the tears from his blood-stained face, a fierce, primal fire igniting in his eyes. He looked down at his dual katanas, then back at the duffel full of fresh rations. "And thank you, Eric, for staying alive."

He wiped the black gore off his blades, strapped his mask back onto his face, and began to pack. The countdown had started, and nothing on this dead earth was going to keep him from that tower.
