In the dark desert.
The dog, Little He, wandered away from the windbreak in the middle of the night to relieve itself, to prevent its owner, Sun Neng, from smelling the scent of its urine.
The scalding urine washed over the yellow sand of the ground, exposing half a human face. Startled, Little He barked and wagged its tail, licking the person's face in hopes of awakening them.
The effect was minimal, not much use at all.
Little He, being quite clever, hurriedly ran to its owner's side, wagging its tail and barking, then dashed off into the distance and stopped, looking back at Sun Neng.
Sun Neng watched the dog, sensing that Little He's reaction was somewhat unusual. He got up and walked toward Little He. Seeing its owner following, Little He wagged its tail even more enthusiastically, overjoyed beyond measure.
Little He ran to the sand where the half face was exposed and stood there wagging its tail.
