Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: Questions Without Answers

The walk back to campus was painfully quiet.

Neither Stacy nor Lucien spoke.

Streetlights illuminated the empty pathways, casting long shadows across the pavement.

The silence between them felt heavier than the fight itself.

Finally...

They reached the entrance to the women's dormitory.

Stacy stopped walking.

Lucien stopped a few steps behind her.

"...Thanks."

He looked up.

"For what?"

She shrugged.

"For making sure I got back safely."

"It was the least I could do."

"The least?"

A small, humorless laugh escaped her.

"I think almost getting attacked raises the bar a little."

Lucien lowered his eyes.

"...You're right."

Stacy turned to face him.

The frustration she'd been holding back all evening finally surfaced.

"I've been thinking."

Lucien waited quietly.

"You tell me to stay away from danger."

"You tell me to trust you."

"You keep showing up whenever something impossible happens."

She folded her arms.

"And somehow..."

"...I'm always the last person to know what's going on."

Lucien didn't deny it.

Because she was right.

"I know you're hiding something."

"I am."

"I know you're trying to protect me."

"...Yes."

"But you're doing a terrible job."

That caught him off guard.

She sighed.

"Do you know what's actually scary?"

He shook his head.

"It's not the people chasing me."

"It's not whatever happened tonight."

"It's not even the fact that none of this makes sense."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"It's being treated like I don't deserve the truth."

The words hit harder than any punch.

Lucien opened his mouth.

Then closed it again.

He wanted to explain.

He really did.

But years of rules...

Training...

Promises...

Stopped him.

"I'm sorry."

Stacy smiled sadly.

"You've apologized a lot."

"It doesn't seem to help."

"No."

"It doesn't."

A cool breeze passed between them.

For a moment...

Neither of them moved.

Then Stacy adjusted the strap of her bag.

"I should go."

Lucien nodded.

"...Goodnight."

She started walking toward the dormitory entrance.

After a few steps...

She stopped.

Without turning around, she spoke.

"You know..."

Lucien looked up.

"I don't think you're a bad person."

His eyes widened slightly.

"I think you're carrying something..."

"...that you don't know how to share."

Silence.

"But until you decide to trust me..."

"...I don't think I can trust you either."

She walked inside.

The dormitory doors closed softly behind her.

Lucien remained standing outside.

Alone.

"You look miserable."

Ethan's voice broke the silence.

Lucien didn't even ask how he'd found him.

"You heard?"

"I didn't need to."

Ethan walked over and leaned against a nearby tree.

"I could tell from your face."

Lucien looked toward the dormitory.

"I made things worse."

"You didn't lie."

"I didn't tell the truth either."

Ethan nodded.

"Sometimes..."

"Those are the same thing."

Lucien let out a slow breath.

"I hate this."

"I know."

"But you also know why the rules exist."

Lucien closed his eyes.

"...Yeah."

"And if she learns everything too soon?"

Lucien didn't answer.

Because he already knew.

The consequences wouldn't only affect Stacy.

They would affect everyone around her.

The next morning...

Stacy arrived on campus earlier than usual.

She needed space to think.

She found a quiet bench beneath an old maple tree and opened her notebook.

Instead of writing class notes...

She wrote questions.

Who is Lucien?

What is a Sentinel?

Who was the hooded man?

Why did he say they were looking for me?

She stared at the list.

Every answer seemed connected to Lucien.

Which meant...

Waiting for him to explain was pointless.

She closed the notebook with determination.

"If nobody's going to tell me..."

"...I'll figure it out myself."

High above the campus...

From the rooftop of the administration building...

The same observer lowered his binoculars.

A faint smile crossed his face.

He spoke quietly into the communicator clipped to his collar.

"Subject Bennett has begun investigating."

A brief silence followed.

Then a calm voice replied,

"Do not stop her."

The observer raised an eyebrow.

"...Are you sure?"

Another pause.

"Some truths..."

"...must be discovered, not taught."

The transmission ended.

The observer looked toward Stacy one last time.

"...Let's see how far your curiosity takes you."
