Evie let out a small laugh, and Ren's ears perked up. The sound was light and bright, and for a second it made him think of Christmas lights in three months—soft and a little magical.
"What's so funny?" he asked.
"Mm… it's just that you're not as cold and unapproachable as I thought," Evie said. "The first time we met in the game, you hid your appearance. There was this invisible wall around you that pushed everyone away."
It was because he had been with her. But Ren kept the truth behind a quiet chuckle. "You're the same as well."
Evie giggled, nodding. "I guess I don't have the right to say that. I kept my distance too." She didn't add the rest—that she avoided attachment because it could become a weakness later. Yet here she was, choosing the opposite.
A chilly breeze lifted a strand of Evie's hair. A heartbeat later came the pitter-patter of the first drops of rain. The taps turned heavy almost at once.
