Evie was about to say that she was on his side when the classroom door burst open.
Dozens of students poured in, laughing and chattering. The peaceful quiet shattered in an instant, replaced by a swarm of voices bouncing off the walls. It was useless to talk now. The noise was so loud it drowned out even the teacher's warning from the hallway.
Evie sighed and gave Ren a small look that said, later. Ren nodded back. Whatever they were about to say was swallowed by the tide of noise.
Across the room, a group of girls had already noticed him.
Sophia leaned back in her chair, arms crossed, eyes narrowed. Beside her sat Rayna and a few others, all whispering behind their hands like birds picking at crumbs.
"Well," Sophia said with a laugh, "it was fun while it lasted."
Her tone carried that sharp edge she used whenever she wanted to sound amused but mean.
One of her friends giggled. "What do you mean? You never even got close to him."
