For one point, he didn't want to have many who could slow him down or be a liability. From another point, he didn't want to expose his forces like that, especially someone like Major and the pirate king.
As for what they wanted, he didn't even mention this to the lady nymph. He avoided asking them anything before the meeting, so they wouldn't take this as a sign of weakness and would make things more difficult for him.
He learnt his lesson quite well from his long dealings with the Toranks. Being generous, kind, or showing respect for anyone dealing with him wasn't right. And on top of anything, showing his weakness or need for something wasn't going to make things easier for him.
