Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: The Black Powder Trigger

The scent of sweet, foreign tobacco inside the dim registry shop was instantly cut by the sharp, metallic odor of freshly caked rain and salt water. Outside, the bells of the Nagasaki harbor chimed to signal the noon rotation, the deep, hollow clangs echoing heavily through the dark-timbered alleys.

Haruka Ito did not shift her stance by a single millimeter, her frame a monument to unbending stillness near the threshold of the doorway.

Her face remained a flawless, unyielding mask of absolute emotional suppression—a frozen room that held zero human inflection. Her right hand was draped precisely inside her wide indigo sleeve, her fingers resting flat against the lacquer saya of her katana. Her bottomless dark eyes locked onto the old shopkeeper's trembling hands. The introduction of early black-powder firearms into the Shadow Cabinet's arsenal did not trigger a single ripple of fear across her serene features. Her Kenshin-style predictive reading was already calculating the physics of the weapon—analyzing the mechanical delay between the spark of the flint, the ignition of the powder, and the trajectory of the lead ball.

"Where exactly is the primary cache located, old man?" Shishio Minamoto demanded, his deep voice dropping into a level, commanding military register that shook the loose tobacco leaves on the shelves. He stepped closer to the cedar counter, his broad shoulders squared. "If the Southern Clans are arming their cells with foreign powder, they must keep the munitions secured near the docks to avoid the Shogunate's high-level tax investigators."

The informant nodded rapidly, his single eye darting toward the open window screens to verify the alley was clear. He leaned over the counter, his voice dropping into a hushed whisper caked in the weight of pure survival. "The southern mercenaries have fortified an abandoned charcoal storehouse at the end of the lower shipping canal. They have caked the perimeter in hidden guard stations. There are twenty elite musketeers guarding the thresholds, led by a ruthless enforcer named Toru. He doesn't carry a standard sword, Young Master... he carries a dual-barrel foreign flintlock pistols, and his reflex is lethal."

"We will dismantle their cache before the sun sets," Shishio stated firmly, his hand resting flat against his hilt as he turned his sharp gaze toward Haruka. "If they deploy those firearms into the main public squares, our unit will be bottlenecked by a wall of lead. We must execute a high-speed nocturnal raid."

Haruka did not alter her posture, her tone a cool sliver of river ice. "The raid will not wait for the night, Shishio. The rain is turning heavy now, and the smoke from the harbor fires will mask our ground dash perfectly. Gather the extra arrows. We march immediately."

------------------------------

The storm descended over the Nagasaki districts with sudden, violent intensity, turning the narrow dirt avenues into a slick swamp of black mud. Torrential sheets of rain smashed against the low-slung tile roofs, sending thick, blinding sheets of white mist coiling through the alleys.

Haruka led the vanguard through the shadows of the shipping canal, her movements impossibly light and silent. Her straw sandals caked the wet stone path without making a single fraction of a sound, her body a fluid blur that left zero footprints behind her track. Behind her silhouette, Shishio, Yasuke, and Takeda moved in a tight tactical formation, their katanas half-drawn from their sashes. Ayaka and Yasumi remained fifty paces to the rear, their knuckles white as they held the medical packs and watched the perimeter.

They rounded the final corner of the brick canal wall, and the massive, iron-reinforced timber gates of the charcoal storehouse materialised through the mist.

Stationed along the wooden viewing platform above the gate were three mercenary guards dressed in dark leather tunics. They didn't carry long spears or standard katanas; in their grips, they held heavy, long-barreled matchlock muskets, their glowing slow-matches protected from the rain beneath oiled silk hoods.

"Intruders near the lower canal!" the lead guard roared, his voice instantly caked in a frantic panic as his eyes caught Haruka's slight frame materializing from the fog.

Bang!

A localized explosion of white smoke and blinding orange fire erupted from the platform as the mercenary pulled his iron trigger. A heavy lead ball whistled through the sheets of rain, tearing a violent chunk out of the stone brick wall precisely where Haruka's head had been a fraction of a millisecond prior.

The crowd of guards expected her to fall, but Haruka's high-speed agility was absolute. Utilizing an explosive ground dash, her body became a singular, fluid blur that completely bypassed human vision. The gravel didn't even have time to displace beneath her feet before she re-materialized at the base of the viewing platform.

She launched herself ten feet into the air, her dark indigo cloak flying outward like wings. Her katana cleared the scabbard with a singular, high-pitched shring that cut through the roar of the gale.

Before the musketeer could even reload his iron barrel, Haruka executed a flawless rotational momentum strike. She spun gracefully through his blind spot, her razor-sharp steel cutting through the air in a clean, terrifying hiss. The high-speed stroke blew the heads clean off the two flanking guards in a fraction of a millisecond. The headless bodies collapsed heavily against the timber railings, their heavy muskets clattering loudly into the canal mud below.

The third guard gasped in profound, paralyzed shock, his hands trembling violently as he desperately tried to reset his matchlock mechanism. Haruka did not let him breathe. She brought her heavy, lacquered wooden saya scabbard upward with high-velocity precision, the blunt wood striking his wrist with a bone-crushing crack that forced his weapon to splay from his fingers. In the same fluid motion, she drove her heel directly into his chest, throwing his frame off the platform to crash into the courtyard below, completely neutralized.

------------------------------

Boom!

The massive timber doors of the storehouse were violently kicked open from the inside.

A squad of ten black-cloaked mercenaries surged into the rainy courtyard, their sashes bearing the distinct heavy bronze tokens of the Southern Clans. At the front of their line stood Toru. The chief enforcer was a slender, wicked-faced warrior with a cruel smile cutting across his jawline. He didn't raise a sword; in his left and right hands, he raised two magnificent, dual-barrel foreign flintlock pistols, the iron barrels pointing directly at Haruka's heart.

"You move with incredible speed, ghost of Kyoto," Toru drawled, his voice a smooth, venomous whisper that cut through the storm. "But your style belongs to a dead era. Steel cannot outrun a spark of foreign powder. Die!"

Bang! Bang!

Two thunderous cracks split the courtyard as Toru fired both barrels simultaneously, a massive wall of white smoke filling the space between them.

Shishio, watching from the canal wall, felt his breath hitch in his throat, his jaw loosening in sudden terror for his mentor. But Haruka's predictive muscle reading had analyzed the contraction of Toru's index fingers and the tilt of his iron sights before the flint had even struck the frizzen.

She executed a blinding side-evasion, her center of gravity dropping to an absolute minimum as her torso twisted sideways by a mere three inches. The two lead balls whistled mere millimeters past the pale, jagged marks tracing sharply down her cheek, tearing clean through her indigo cloak but missing her flesh completely.

Before the smoke could even dissipate, Haruka surged forward, her katana tracing a flawless horizontal sweep through the white haze.

Toru's eyes widened in pure, unadulterated terror as he realized his lethal firearms were empty. He dropped the pistols, desperately reaching for a short wakizashi at his waist, but he was far too slow. Haruka dived inside his guard, her blade executing a rapid sequence of high-velocity slashes across his chest, instantly followed by a definitive horizontal stroke that sheared the iron tokens from his sash.

The remaining ten mercenaries, witnessing the absolute defeat of their firearm-wielding commander within ninety seconds of roaring steel, froze in paralyzed shock. Their weapons trembled violently as they looked into Haruka's dark, bottomless eyes and saw nothing but an empty, terrifying void of permafrost.

Shishio, Yasuke, and Takeda surged into the courtyard right behind her, their weapons clearing their sashes with a loud, synchronized metallic ring as they blocked the inner storehouse exits, completely securing the cache.

Haruka stood motionless amidst the smoke and rain, her chest rising and falling in slow, measured breaths. She performed Chiriburi—a sharp, precise snap of her wrist that sent a spray of crimson blood flying off her pristine steel onto the wet earth—before housing her blade into her lacquer scabbard with a soft, final clack.

She turned her sharp, vacant gaze toward the remaining mercenaries, her voice cutting through the storm like a sheet of pure river ice. "Drop your steel and surrender this cache immediately, or my blade will ensure your line ends in this mud before the sun sets."

Shamed and terrified by the display of god-like, impossible velocity, the mercenaries dropped their weapons one by one, the black-powder cache of the Nagasaki district officially dismantled.
