Chapter 736 - Fourth Arc (Thorns of The Black Throne) - 501. A King’s Habit?

Fourth Arc (Thorns of The Black Throne) - 501. A King's Habit?

She had felt the resonance.

Even if only for a moment.

Angel closed the door quietly behind her.

The room fell into softer silence.

Seraphine walked toward the balcony doors slowly, fingertips brushing lightly over the back of a chair.

"The sunrise in Pontus is beautiful," she said.

"It is."

She glanced toward him faintly. "Though I imagine Euphorion has its own charms."

Angel leaned lightly against the edge of the table.

"Different charms."

Her lips curved slightly.

"You speak carefully."

"So do you."

That earned the faintest flicker of amusement from her.

Interesting indeed.

She moved toward the balcony again, letting the morning light touch her face.

"I was surprised to see you awake so early," she said casually.

"I sleep lightly."

"A king's habit?"

"A survivor's."

The answer made her pause.

For just a second.

She looked back at him slowly.

"You speak as if survival and rulership are different things."

"They should be."

The silence between them stretched.

Seraphine tilted her head slightly.

"You dislike kings who rule through fear."

Not a question.

Angel's gaze remained steady.

"No. I dislike weak rulers."

Again, not anger.

Not judgment.

Just certainty.

Seraphine felt something tighten pleasantly in her chest at the answer.

Darius had never spoken like this.

Darius barked.

Darius demanded.

Angel simply stated truths like mountains stating their existence.

She turned toward him fully now.

"And what defines weakness to you?"

Angel's eyes did not leave hers.

"Insecurity."

The word landed softly.

But it hit exactly where it needed to.

Seraphine's smile did not move.

"You think insecurity is dangerous?"

"Yes."

"How?"

Angel walked toward the balcony slowly until he stood beside her, looking down at the courtyard.

"An insecure king destroys things to reassure himself he still can."

Seraphine listened quietly.

"He wages unnecessary wars. Silences capable people. Treats loyalty as threat."

Her pulse slowed slightly.

Because he was describing Darius perfectly.

"And what if the king is surrounded by enemies?" she asked softly.

"Then he should become competent," Angel replied evenly. "Not paranoid."

Seraphine's gaze lingered on him for another moment before she spoke again.

"What about you?"

Angel glanced at her faintly.

"You waged war against several kingdoms," she continued calmly. "And took them."

Her voice remained smooth, but there was challenge beneath it now.

"What you just said sounds ironic to me."

The morning breeze moved through the balcony curtains, stirring loose strands of her hair.

Angel did not answer immediately.

Instead, he looked back toward the courtyard below, eyes distant for a brief second.

"Then," he said quietly, "do you think what I did was paranoia?"

Seraphine tilted her head slightly.

"I'm asking you."

Angel's lips curved faintly, though not into a smile.

"No."

His answer came without hesitation.

"What I did," he continued, "was survival."

Seraphine watched him carefully.

"Asteria tried to kill me," he said evenly. "Not politically. Literally."

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"I heard rumors."

"They weren't rumors."

The words landed cold and flat.

"The moment they realized I wouldn't become the prince they could control, they removed me."

Seraphine's pulse slowed slightly.

Interesting.

Angel continued calmly.

"Asteria aligned itself with Zephyrus. Then with Draconis."

He finally looked at her again.

"They offered Rose to Draconis as a symbol of alliance."

Seraphine's gaze sharpened faintly.

"And yet she became your queen."

"She chose me."

Simple.

Absolute.

Again that certainty.

Seraphine almost hated how much she liked hearing it.

"And the kingdoms?" she asked softly. "You conquered them because they betrayed you?"

"No."

Angel's tone remained steady.

"I conquered them because they became threats to Euphorion."

There was no pride in his voice.

No pleasure.

Just fact.

"A weak king waits until enemies reach his gates," Angel said quietly. "A competent one understands intentions before armies move."

Seraphine studied him in silence.

Young.

Too young to sound this old.

There was darkness in him, but unlike Darius, it was controlled. Restrained. Sharpened into discipline instead of rotting into bitterness.

Her ancestor would have knelt to someone like this willingly.

The thought startled her slightly.

Angel suddenly turned his head.

Their eyes met directly.

Seraphine held his gaze easily.

"Your song this morning," he said calmly.

Her heartbeat skipped once.

"Yes?"

"It was ancient."

Not beautiful.

Not pleasant.

Ancient.
