Chapter 1 - 1.

Maren was not a transmigrator, a chosen hero, or the heir to some ancient kingdom. He was simply a young man from a poor village in a lawless frontier, where survival depended on whether the harvest was good, the wells remained full, and the local bandits decided to leave you alone. His family had little, his village had even less, and there was no kingdom coming to save them.

One day, while clearing an irrigation ditch that had been dry for weeks, Maren struck something beneath the mud. It was a pendant, old but strangely well preserved. He turned it over in his hand, inspecting the dull metal and worn surface. It did not look particularly valuable, but perhaps someone in a nearby town would buy it.

"Could probably sell you."

The moment his fingers closed around it, the world changed.

Maren suddenly saw things he had never known existed. The water trapped beneath the mud carried a faint presence. The soil beneath his feet seemed to possess layers beyond its physical appearance. Even the weeds growing along the ditch contained something deeper, something that was not merely matter.

The pendant had given him the ability to perceive Essence.

Within the pendant remained a fragment of an ancient God, a being who had once possessed power beyond anything Maren could comprehend. Yet the God did not give him overwhelming strength, nor did he hand him a complete cultivation technique. He had discovered the existence of Essence only after reaching godhood himself, and he had spent the remainder of his existence attempting to understand how it could be cultivated. He died before completing that path.

His legacy was therefore unfinished.

The God taught Maren only the foundation: everything possesses Essence, but seeing Essence is not the same as understanding it. Understanding is not the same as mastering it. And mastery cannot be achieved simply by wanting something badly enough.

"What can I do with it?" Maren asked.

The ancient remnant regarded him for a moment.

"What do you understand?"

That answer frustrated him because it was not really an answer at all. Maren tried to command the water, but nothing happened. He tried again. Still nothing.

Then he stopped trying to force it.

He looked at the ditch.

Why had the water disappeared in the first place? Where had it gone? How did the soil hold it? Why did some plants survive longer than others? What made water flow downhill? What happened to it when the sun heated the ground?

The moment he began asking questions he genuinely wanted answered, the Essence became clearer.

The God had not given him power.

He had given him a way to see.

Everything else would have to be earned.

And so Maren returned to the problem that had existed before the pendant, before the ancient God, and before the strange Essence he could now perceive.

His village needed water.

He picked up his shovel and went back to work.

For now, that was enough.

One mystery at a time.
