Anna POV :
After a few days passed, Anna came to work, today is the first day of her summer job. She was excited to work as a company nurse in Chairman Yang's company. She wore a navy blue scrub suit. Her sister Sarah packed her lunch box.
"Bro! Can I borrow your sneakers" she asked permission from Sarah while walking downstairs
(Bro is their usually used compared to sister because they have no elder brother,...weird right)
"Alright!" She answered " 100 pesos per day" She added
"What?" She was surprised" That's expensive "she commented and laughed
"Of course...that's branded" and she chuckled
And they both laughed
"Okay ... just added to my debt list" she laughed loudly
"Here!" Sarah gave her lunchbox " Hopefully you have an ice cream for me" she said
" ice cream, "She asked
"yes! You borrowed my sneakers and now I prepared your lunches...in exchange for ice cream ..." she explained while putting the lunchbox on Anna's back bag
"Ok ok ok" she replied "Thank you ...you're so sweet "she praised her
"Don't forget I want keto ice cream!" She requested
"What!" She was surprised "That's expensive," she said
" I know...you know that ... I am on a diet "; she said and smirked
"Oh my...I think just want to change my mind" she said and smiled" alright I have to go ... I'm late " she ran
Anna left, she hurriedly went to the company.
At 7:30 in the morning, Anna arrived at the clinic.
The hallway was quiet, almost too quiet for a workplace that would soon be filled with complaints, footsteps, and urgency. She walked slowly toward the clinic and there she met Nurse Kate—tall, pretty, and composed in her crisp white uniform. But behind her calm face was a presence that made the room feel slightly less empty.
"Good morning," Kate greeted, her tone warm but professional.
Anna nodded.
Without wasting time, Kate began the orientation. She led Anna toward the metal cabinet and opened it with a soft metallic click that echoed through the room.
"This is our equipment," she said.
Inside were the essentials: digital BP apparatus, thermometer, and stethoscope—lined neatly, almost intimidating in their order.
She moved to the second drawer.
"This is the first aid kit."
Kate opened a red box inside and revealed its contents slowly, almost deliberately—like each item carried importance beyond its label.
"Alcohol… stainless tweezers… clean gloves… sterile gloves… cotton balls… micropore… adhesive bandages… white cloth… Betadine… gauze… isotonic solution… eye patch… eyewash solution…"
Her voice was steady, but the list felt heavier with every word, like a reminder that emergencies never announce themselves.
She then pulled out a folder.
"These are the hospital contact numbers," she said, tapping it lightly. "Especially the emergency lines. You must never forget this."
Anna listened carefully, absorbing everything.
Kate then leaned slightly closer, lowering her voice.
"Common complaints here are dizziness, headaches, nausea, stomachache… dysmenorrhea. You'll see them often."
Anna nodded again.
Kate smiled faintly.
And for the first time that morning, she looked relieved.
"With you here," Kate said softly, "I won't feel bored or sleepy anymore during duty."
At lunch break, the atmosphere shifted completely.
The clinic faded behind them as they stepped into the canteen—louder, brighter, filled with conversations and clinking utensils.
Kate guided Anna through the crowd, introducing her as they went.
"Hi, Ma'am Kate!" staff members greeted.
"Hi," Kate answered casually, walking as if she belonged everywhere and nowhere at once.
"What do you want, Anna?" Kate asked.
"I have lunch," Anna replied, standing in front of the counter.
"If you don't like the food here, don't worry—it's free," Kate said lightly. "Just choose your viand."
Anna hesitated. "That's not what I mean…"
Kate chuckled.
They finally sat down and started eating.
But peace didn't last long.
A woman approached their table with confident steps.
"New?" Nancy asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Ma'am Nancy!" Kate greeted immediately.
Nancy smiled like someone who knew every secret in the building. "Oh yes… she's Anna. Well, well… I'm not the only one 'new' in this company now."
She laughed at her own remark.
"Hi, girl," Nancy said, looking at Anna.
"Hi," Anna replied, waving slightly.
"Don't believe her," Nancy added suddenly, pointing at Kate. "She taught you well? Hmmm… that's wrong!" She burst into laughter.
"Uy!" Kate protested.
"I'm just kidding," Nancy said quickly. "I'm Nancy—from Marketing."
"Or 'Nicey,'" Kate added. "Because Nancy is too long."
"Nicey… nice name," Anna said politely.
They all laughed.
Nancy and Kate had been friends since Kate started working in the company three years ago—long enough to share secrets they should probably not share in public.
As they ate, Nancy suddenly leaned in.
"Anyway… my boss is already engaged."
"Really?" Kate asked, instantly interested.
Anna quietly observed them, trying to keep up.
"You'll meet them someday," Kate said to Anna.
Then Kate smirked. "Her boss is my crush."
Nancy pointed at her. "Yes! And that's why her boyfriend is insecure."
They both laughed.
"Hey!" Kate said. "He's your crush too!"
"Fine," Nancy admitted dramatically. "I always have fantasies about him… he smells so good I just want to hug him."
The table fell silent.
Then—
A presence.
Behind Nancy.
Still.
Heavy.
Kate's eyes widened slightly. Anna froze.
Nancy kept talking, unaware.
Until she noticed their expressions.
"What?" Nancy asked.
Slowly, she turned.
The color drained from her face.
Chairman Yang stood behind her.
Silent. Expression unreadable. Watching.
Nancy's confidence collapsed instantly.
She stood up so fast her chair scraped the floor.
"I am sorry, Cha… Chair… man," she stuttered.
But he raised a hand.
"That's okay, Ms. Nancy," he said calmly. "You may continue your lunch. Don't mind me."
Then his gaze shifted.
He looked at Anna.
"Enjoy your meal," he said.
Anna nodded quickly, forcing a small smile.
And then he was gone.
The moment he left, silence exploded into embarrassment.
Nancy sank back into her seat.
"Oh my goodness… why didn't you give me a sign?" she whispered urgently.
"We did!" Kate said immediately.
"You did?" Nancy groaned. "Maybe today will be my last day."
"Really?" they both asked at once.
"I'm joking!" she said, drinking her juice too quickly. "Maybe they'll fire me."
Kate sighed. Anna exhaled.
Then Nancy leaned in again—like nothing had happened.
"By the way… have you met Daniel?"
"No," Kate and Anna answered.
"Daniel Yang is charming… more than Thomas," she said.
"Oh!" they both reacted.
Nancy's voice softened, almost dreamy.
"Have you ever looked at someone and felt like you're in a fairy tale? Like they're looking into your soul?"
The two shook their heads.
"Hmm… that's him. He's approachable. And he smells good, dear."
Anna stayed quiet, listening more carefully now.
"I met him on my first day. He came to the boss's office. He and my boss are very close. He studied at Harvard."
"Harvard?" Anna repeated.
Nancy nodded firmly. "He's intelligent. Your ideal man."
"Not literally…" Anna said with a small smile.
Kate chuckled.
"If you meet him," Nancy added, "you'll become anti-Thomas and anti-Kent."
"And who is Kent?" Anna asked.
Kate answered this time. "He's good-looking… but he always bullies Sir Tom."
"Oh really?" Anna laughed softly.
"Yes," Nancy said. "And Sir Thomas and Sir Daniel… they're like brothers."
Kate added, "They're next in line to be CEO."
Anna hesitated. "What about their parents?"
The atmosphere shifted slightly.
Nancy leaned back. "Sir Marvin Yang… Chairman Yang's son. He's sick. The doctors told him to avoid stress. He's kind… like his wife."
Kate sighed. "That's Nancy. She talks too much."
"And what about Kent and Daniel's parents?" Anna asked again.
Kate and Nancy exchanged a look.
"Why are you so interested?" Nancy asked slowly.
Anna laughed awkwardly. "I'm just curious… I'm new here."
Nancy studied her for a second longer than necessary.
Then she continued.
"Sir Kent's grandfather is Chairman Yang's elder brother. Sir Daniel's grandfather is the youngest. But Chairman Yang built this company, so the rest are just stockholders."
Then she lowered her voice slightly.
"I also heard Sir Thomas's fiancée is one of the stockholders…"
"Really?" Kate asked.
"Yes," Nancy said quickly.
"You mean Mildred?" Anna asked.
Nancy paused for a fraction of a second.
"Yes… Mildred. Her parents died when she was young. They were also stockholders. That's why Chairman Yang kept her close."
Kate frowned. "They're finally engaged, right?"
"Yes," Nancy said. "But Chairman Yang disagreed with the engagement."
"Why?" Anna asked immediately.
This time, both Kate and Nancy looked at her more carefully.
Suspicion lingered in the air.
"Why are you so interested?" Nancy repeated.
Anna forced a light laugh.
"I just… want to understand. I'm new."
Silence stretched for a second.
Then Kate sighed.
"Let her be. She's new anyway."
Nancy checked the time suddenly.
"Oh no… it's already 1:10 PM. We need to go back."
Kate stood. "Let's go."
They quickly finished their food and stood up.
Nancy rushed ahead, almost running, trying to escape the embarrassment still burning in her chest.
And somewhere in the distance, the clinic waited—quiet again—but no longer simple.
Because something unspoken had already started to settle in.
Meanwhile, Anna and Kate had just returned to the clinic when a page suddenly came in from Marvin Yang's secretary.
Kate's expression immediately changed.
"Anna, I need your help," she said quickly. "Bring the first aid kit, BP apparatus, and stethoscope."
Without another word, they rushed out.
Their footsteps echoed sharply through the hallway—fast, urgent, and tense.
Something was wrong.
They arrived at Marvin Yang's office breathless.
Inside, the atmosphere felt heavy.
Chairman Yang was already there, standing stiffly near the center of the room, his usual composure slightly shaken. Thomas Yang was in the corner, speaking urgently on the phone.
And on the couch—
Marvin Yang.
Pale. Trembling. Covered in cold sweat. Weak… almost collapsing into himself.
Kate immediately rushed to him.
She began checking his vital signs while Anna assisted her, hands steady despite the tension filling the room.
Then Anna leaned slightly closer and whispered,
"Ma'am Kate… I think he's hypoglycemic."
Kate's eyes narrowed instantly.
She grabbed the glucometer without hesitation.
A quick prick. A drop of blood. A few seconds that felt far too long.
The result flashed.
Critically low.
Kate's face changed.
"What is it?" Chairman Yang asked sharply, his voice cutting through the tension.
Anna froze for a second—realizing she had spoken too loudly.
"I already called Dr. Kim," Thomas said as he approached them quickly, still holding his phone.
Kate didn't look away from Marvin.
"He is hypoglycemic," she said firmly. "We need juice. Or gum. Anything sweet. Now."
"Wait—in my office refrigerator," Thomas said immediately.
He ran out.
The room fell into a tense silence.
Only Marvin's weak breathing filled the space.
Minutes later, Thomas returned with several bottles of juice. He quickly opened one and handed it to Anna.
"Here."
Anna took it and immediately moved to Marvin.
She gently lifted his head, carefully helping him drink to prevent aspiration.
"Is he diabetic?" Anna asked quietly.
"No, he isn't," Thomas answered quickly. "He skipped meals. Mom said he's been on a diet."
Anna wiped Marvin's sweat while supporting him.
"Let me," Thomas said softly, taking over. He carefully helped his father drink.
"Pa…" he called.
Marvin was still weak, but his color was slowly returning—not as pale as before.
Kate spoke with Dr. Kim over the phone, giving a rapid update on his condition.
After Marvin finished the juice, they waited.
Fifteen long minutes.
Anna checked his blood sugar again.
"It's increasing," she said softly.
Relief washed over the room.
"How are you feeling, Marv?" Chairman Yang asked as he stepped closer.
Marvin slowly nodded and forced a weak smile.
"You frightened us," Thomas said, exhaling.
"I'm sorry…" Marvin said weakly. Then, suddenly, his eyes shifted. "Ahh… Anna, you're here."
Anna gave a small, polite smile.
Marvin tried to sit up.
"I just wanted to see our company nurses…" he joked faintly.
"Haiisst," Thomas hissed. "Alright, he's fine now."
Marvin chuckled weakly. "I'm hungry…"
After thirty minutes, Dr. Kim arrived with his medical bag.
He is a family medicine doctor and a close family friend.
"Dr. Kim," Chairman Yang greeted.
"I'm sorry, Chairman. Traffic," he explained.
"No worries. Please check my son," Chairman Yang said.
Dr. Kim walked over and examined Marvin carefully.
After a few moments, he smiled.
"It looks like your nurses already did my job," he said.
Kate and Anna exchanged a proud glance.
"I was updated while driving," Dr. Kim continued. "At first, I thought he might need admission, but he's stable now. Blood sugar is 80 mg/dL."
"I hate hospitals, Doc," Marvin muttered immediately.
"Are you sure he doesn't need admission? What about his heart?" Thomas asked worriedly.
"He's fine," Dr. Kim confirmed.
"Yes, I am fine," Marvin insisted. Then he added weakly, "Unless Kate stays with me—right, Anna?"
They all laughed.
"I'm just kidding, Kate," Marvin said quickly.
Dr. Kim closed his bag. "What he needs now is food."
"I'm hungry," Marvin admitted. "I haven't eaten for two days… only water."
"What?" they all said in unison.
"Hey, don't look at me like that," Marvin protested weakly. "I'm not a criminal."
"Alright, what do you want?" Thomas asked.
"Anything," Marvin replied.
Dr. Kim prepared to leave. "Excuse me, I have another patient at the hospital."
Then he turned to Kate.
"Ms. Kate, may I speak with you for a moment?"
"Thank you, Doctor," Chairman Yang said as they shook hands.
"Thank you, Doc!" Thomas added, waving.
They both left the room.
Meanwhile, Anna quietly packed their things and cleaned the area.
"Thank you, Anna," Marvin said softly with a faint smile.
Anna nodded politely.
Then Chairman Yang spoke.
"Why don't you stay a little longer? We'd like to have a snack with you."
"Yes, please," Marvin added. "So you can still check on me."
Anna hesitated, visibly shy.
"I… uh…" she said softly, then finally nodded.
After an hour, food arrived, and they ate together.
For a brief moment, the tension faded.
But not completely.
"Anna, would you like to have dinner with us?" Chairman Yang suddenly asked.
"Ah no… Ch—" Anna stuttered.
"I told you," he interrupted firmly, "call me Lolo."
"Please join us."
"Hm… I can't?" Anna refused softly.
"You have a date?" Marvin asked suddenly, curious.
All eyes turned to her.
"No! No!" Anna quickly shook her head. "My parents came this morning. I'm excited to meet them."
"Oh," Chairman Yang said, slightly disappointed. "I thought you had a date."
He sighed.
"Alright. Tom will send you home."
"What?" Thomas reacted immediately.
"I will send my fiancée to the airport tonight," he added quickly, almost defensively.
"No… no, I can go home alone," Anna interrupted.
"I insist," Chairman Yang said firmly. "Tom will send you home. That is final."
"Haiisst," Thomas muttered under his breath.
Anna glanced at him and immediately felt guilty.
Chairman Yang stood up and left.
Anna followed him and closed the door behind.
"Lolo, please," she pleaded softly. "I can go home alone. He needs to send his fiancée."
"Anna, please don't," he replied without stopping.
"But, Lolo—"
He ignored her and walked away.
Anna stood still for a moment, conflicted and frustrated.
She didn't want to burden Thomas.
She took a deep breath, turned around, and went back to gather her things.
Then she froze.
Thomas was standing behind her.
Close.
Watching her.
Their eyes met—and for a brief moment, neither of them spoke.
Anna quickly looked away.
Thomas stepped closer, then stopped.
"I will send you home at 5 p.m. sharp," he said quietly.
Then he walked away.
Anna stood there, heart racing for reasons she didn't understand.
Then she sighed, picked up her things, and returned to Marvin Yang's office.
But somehow…
the air no longer felt the same.
