Chapter11
The suited man smiled.
Then he turned and walked away.
Ryan lost sight of him as he disappeared behind a stack of shipping containers.
"Not good," Ryan muttered.
"What?" McNab asked.
Ryan pointed toward the docks.
"The van's heading somewhere important."
Welters glanced ahead.
The industrial skyline of the waterfront was already visible.
"You know that how?"
Ryan immediately regretted speaking.
"...Another feeling."
Welters slapped the steering wheel.
"Stop having feelings!"
The police radio crackled.
"Additional units are en route. Swat has also been dispatched"
McNab nodded.
"Good. Because if this is what I think it is, we're going to need them."
The van shot through a red light.
Cars scattered out of its path.
A moment later it exited the main road and barreled down a private industrial access road.
"There it is," McNab said.
The docks came into full view.
Ryan's Byakugan expanded.
The scene unfolded before him.
Three warehouses.
Two cargo cranes.
A cargo ship docked at Pier 17.
At least twenty armed men.
Several vehicles.
Stacks of crates.
And enough stolen jewelry to fill a small store.
His stomach sank.
This was way beyond a simple robbery investigation right?
The suspects inside the van seemed relieved as they approached.
Their reinforcements were waiting.
Unfortunately for them, police sirens were now echoing from multiple directions.
One of the guards spotted the approaching vehicles.
His eyes widened.
Then chaos erupted.
"POLICE!"
Half the criminals ran toward the ship.
The other half reached for weapons.
"Aw hell," Welters muttered.
The van finally screeched to a halt.
The rear doors flew open.
The suspects poured out.
Gunfire erupted almost immediately.
McNab ducked behind the engine block of their cruiser.
"Take cover!"
Ryan and Welters followed.
Bullets pinged off metal.
Glass shattered nearby.
Sirens rang out as Several patrol cars arrived behind them.
Officers quickly established a perimeter.
The criminals had numbers.
The police had training and cover.
For a moment the situation settled into a tense standoff.
Then Ryan noticed something.
The explosives.
The bag was still inside the van.
And one of the criminals was moving toward it.
His heart skipped.
The man wasn't trying to escape.
He was trying to open it.
'God !!! man run to the ships with your other friends , why do you gotta stand out.' Ryan though in exasperation
Ryan focused on the man's lips.
"Boss will kill us anyway...Take them with us."
Ryan's eyes widened.
"Oh, that's bad."
"What?" Welters asked.
"Very bad."
The suspect pulled something from the bag.
A detonator, it was a cylinder with a big red button on the top ,
Ryan didn't know the range of the explosion the explosives would have
He did know how that detonator the man was holding worked , was it a dead man's trigger?,did pushing the button start a count down or would it explode immediately
All of these things he didn't know .all he knew was that he could help in this situation
He looked around at the officers that arrived as back up
Every officer behind cover suddenly seemed much too close.
Ryan's mind raced.
The distance was too far for a normal throw.
Too many people were in danger.
The suspect's thumb moved toward the trigger.
Time seemed to slow.
The Byakugan tracked every movement.
Every muscle.
Every heartbeat.
Every fraction of a second.
Ryan made his decision.
His feet moved before his brain could stop them.
"ROOKIE!" Welters shouted.
Ryan exploded from cover.
The world blurred around him.
Years of Neji's combat experience flowed through his body.
Chakra flowed through his legs as bolted with inhumane like speed
The suspect looked up.
On the first blink he saw one of the officers jump up from cover to make a dash for him
'stupid , you'll..never'
He blinked again
The officeer enlarged in his vision suddenly
Confused.
He blinked again
The officer is enlarged again
'whats happening is he.. getting clos-'
Then alarmed.
He blinked again
Suddenly the officer Disappeared from his vision
Then terrified.
He looked down only to see the officer bent down in a weird stance
Ryan crossed the distance far faster than anyone expected.
His hand shot forward.
Gentle Fist.
A precise strike landed against the man's forearm.
The arm instantly went limp.
The detonator slipped from nerveless fingers.
Before it hit the ground, Ryan caught it.
Silence.
The gunfire seemed to stop for a brief moment.
Everyone stared.
The suspect stared at his useless arm.
Ryan stared at the detonator.
Then at the dozens of people staring at him.
"...Good news," he said.
"The bomb isn't going off."
Several officers blinked.
One criminal lowered his rifle.
Another looked at Ryan as if he'd just witnessed a superhero.
Welters slowly stood up behind the patrol car.
McNab removed his glasses.
Neither man spoke for several seconds.
Finally, Welters pointed at Ryan.
"I don't care what anyone says."
"He's definitely not normal."
And judging by the expression on the face of the suited man watching from the cargo ship, Ryan had just made himself very interesting indeed.
