Chapter 24 - Fluke in the hands of fate

Nick made an attempt to at an airy conversation around the table which didn't have to be kept long as Mr Simons Snr asked to be excused. Something about a back ache so he took and early night. A courteous depature was made in the table before they also decided to take the much needed rest in their respective bedrooms. Dana headed for the bathroom while her parents went to Nick's old bedroom.

" I can't believe my bedroom still looks the same" Nick said in wonderment

"I think the words are : my bedroom feels a lot more cleaner, right sweetheart" Sally replied teasing her husband. She knew how much Nick adored his mother albeit her cold demeanour. She was still his mother and she had to suck it up because she loved her husband. She often wondered how the difference could be so stark between them, like totally different! She couldn't see Nick in Snr Mrs Simons and she made a soft sigh. God had mercy on her husband and he took on the caring, loving, warm traits from his dad.

Mr Simons is your typical good husband and she wondered how he could've fallen in love with such a cold women or maybe Nick was right, maybe his mother wasn't always like that . . . God knows what molded her to who she is now. They changed into night wear and retired to sleep while Dana stood infront of the rectangular mirror on the wall in the bathroom, staring at her reflection.

What was the probability that this was her adopted grandmother? Heck, she is adopted but well . . . is it possible for someone to adopt an old, evil, vile women just so she can be that grandmother who hates everything you are, evrything you do! That women hated the very oxygen she brethed but more so, she felt offended to be breathing in the same oxygen. Her grandmother didn't always hate her like that until she turned 5 years or that's how she remembers it to be like, or maybe she had always hated her but she was too young to notice the obvious hatred. Dana couldn't tell.

She pressed her lips to a thin smile to try and reign in the hot tears that are begging to be let loose. No, she couldn't cry, Not now! She headed to her bedroom and plopped herself ontop of the bed while rummaging her travel bag for her pj's. She decided on her pick, sultry night dress that only went just until halfway through her thigh and she could finally draw up the covers and retire to sleep. What she didn't know thou was the true dawning of the saying 'no rest for the wicked'.

She was up early, the sun was just peeking in the horizon. The warm reddish spectres already decorating the cloudless blue sky. She smiled at the beauty of it and tilted her head to let the warmth bathe her face through the open bedroom curtain. Nature at it's best. She wanted to grab a fruit and go jogging as an excuse to pass by the bloom of sunflowers and the multiverse of wild, colorful wildflowers that lace the pedestrian roads on every turn. She changed into a looted grey track suite and put on black kicks. She made her way to the kitchen to grab a fruit and bottled mineral water from the fridge before heading out on her adventurous jog. She turned around, ready to roll when she bumped to her grandmother, almost stepping on her toes " oh im sorry grandma, I was just on my way out, goodmorning" she beamed raising the water and the fruit in her hands to show her grandmother that she is already on her way out.

" Hushh, come with me" her grandmother said dragging her to the basement. Skeptical as she was, the sheer strength the women used to pull her left her no choice but to follow. She closed the door behind her and turned around to face Dana.

"Listen here and listen to me very carefully because im not going to repeat myself for the third time. Nobody wants you here and now that they can finally love blood of their own, you've become easily disposable. I see that you were about to run so why don't we make this one long permanent run" she sneered with sinister intentions.

"I-I don't understand . . . wha . . . how . . . what do you mean by all this? Look I know you never liked me but how could you be so cruel? I mean . . . where should I go"? Dana asked in frustration.

Were her parents expecting a child? No, they would have told her, right? She didn't know how much she could believe this woman and her struggle to get rid of her.

"Look, I am just being lenient with you but if you think you're going to come here and destroy me then you have another thing coming" she smiled in dark humor that Dana failed to understand "so what's it going to be Princess" she asked playing coy which didn't elude Dana this time.

"You must be kidding me! You think you're just going to het rid of me as easy as that because you're insecured? There is no way you're getting away with this-" before Dana could finally give the woman a piece of her mind, the women grabbed her by the neck in a choke and pressed her against the door with a bang making her whiz for breath

where did that strength come from?

It took her a while to realise that her grandmother wasn't exactly the grandmother she knew but just a reflection of flesh. Her eyes had turned midnight black with no hint of humanity in them. They looked nothing short of demonic! Her teeth had turned to small sharp canines like she was a predator. She opened her mouth with just "then you leave me no choice" before she made a shrill scrram like a banshee and Dana could literally feel her brains melting before a loud constant bang intruded her head.

"Dana, open this door right this moment" a broken voice sounded as if pleading for her life and it took her a while to realise that she was dreaming.

It's just a dream!

She woke up panting and her head hurts like someone was electrocuting her brains from the inside. She knew she had just woken up from a bad dream but all the pictures looked hazy so she decided to save her skull and opened her bedroom door to hear almost muffled shouting and it sounded like her mother was awake and still battling for her mother-in-law's approval. No, that's not her mother so she neared. She headed for the long hall way and to say she was surprised didn't even cut it. Yes the corridor was dimly lit but that voice was unmistakable!

"Oh get over yourself Lexine, I don't get bothered by women of your status anymore" Snr Mrs Simons said glaring at the other women with a smug smile.

"No, you get over it Eleanor. He chose you! Why won't you be happy with that? Mhm . . . Or is it that he still fancies me during your lobe making"? Miss Lawson spat back, taunting her daughter's mother in law.

There stood her favorite grandmother in the whole universe, grandma Lawson!

Dana couldn't care less about them being at each other's throat although their bickering was amusing . . . who knew it was a love rivalry. She let the rest of it slide as she took swift steps and squealed at her. She couldn't contain her joy at seeing her favorite grandmother.

"Grandma" she wanted to say a lot of things but none of them came out as the women hugged her tightly to her bosom. She was here now, her alt mother and her best friend from childhood. She closed her eyes to bask in her grandmother's presence but not before she caught Snr Mrs Simons flinch like their show of affection physically made her sick. Dana couldn't care less about the gesture.

"What time is it mommy"? Dana asked when she finally figured that it wasn't yet morning. She smiled taking in the appearance of her stylish grandma and she couldn't believe how much she still idolized fashion in her formal cream white pencil skirt, a matching blouse and a baby blue silk shirt. You could just tell that she made a dash from a long boardroom meeting. She smiled before flipping her left hand to reveal the carats on her wrist that could never lie about her background.

"It's a little over 1am pumpkin pie, and don't you dare give me that look because this is important more than just a job" she said reprimanding my ever transparent emotions that showed on my face.

"Just a job? You mean the one that afford you those shoes? The carats? The jewellery? The cars? The apartments? Jeez gramps you inflate my big ego" Dana said puffing her chest out.

"You'll tell me all about it at sunrise but for now, let me share a bed with my Princess" and Dana couldn't be any happier to oblige. They made their way back to the bedroom

Completely oblivious to the figure that crept along with them in the shadows with only one intention . . . kill them both!
