Chapter 20 - Chapter 20

What Will was mostly lacking, was a decent weapon. He had his flint knives and spearheads, however he needed something more durable, and also a ranged weapon. He has considered a bow, however he didn't know how to make one, and also figured he was two small to use a decent bow.

When the children came back the next day, they had brought everything he requested. He didn't go for anything too complicated or big, to avoid confusing the kids or having them end up not being able to carry the items. He had asked for two rolls of cotton string, which to his surprise ended up being the most expensive thing on his shopping list. Will had also asked for a hunting knife, it wasn't that big, but in his hands they looked like a machete. He requested some woodworking tools. And the last two items were a small iron pot and some lead weights used for scales. All this cost him almost all his coins, the rest he split with the kids who helped him. The kids were curious, and asked what he was going to use the things for, but Will just smirked and didn't answer.

Later that evening he told Sister Lina that he was going to prepare some things for spring and wasn't going to show up for a while. "At least come up for breakfast, okay? You'll probably forget to eat otherwise." Sister Lina huffed with her hands on her hips, while giving Will a stern look. He just gave her a wide grin and ran off to the kitchen and into his little home.

Will's plan was to make a throwing sling, since he couldn't use bows, he would use the next best thing. Throwing slings were quite powerful compared to its simplicity, a good sling paired with a skilled user would be just as deadly as a high caliber gun. So will started by weaving the string into thicker string. He had plenty of leather scraps to make the pouch for the projectile, so he cut the pouch into shape and attached the thicker strings to each side. On one end of the string he made a small loops to fit around his finger, and on the other end he made a knot for better grip. He made two slings for backup, however he had plenty of material to make more. The difficult part was going to be the projectiles. He was going to make them out of led, but he needed cast for them. Since he didn't have access to a smithy, and since he was only dealing with led, he decided to make a cast out of wood.

He got a hold of a rather thick piece of wood and with a small saw, that came with the woodworking tools, he cut it in half. He used a small chisel to carve out the shape of the projectiles, they were oval shaped with sharp ends like a lemon, but the size of marbles. The shape didn't turn out perfect, but he did his best to get the shapes as smooth as possible. Since he didn't have a drill, he had to make one himself. He took a small piece of sharp flint, attached it to a stick the thickness of his finger, and made a small bow. The bow wasn't the kind to fire arrows with, but the kind to spin the stick with. He looped the string around the stick and placed it on the cast, he moved the bow back and forth which made the stick into a makeshift drill. He made small holes in the cast for each of the projectiles, so he could pour the led in. Making the cast was arduous and tedious work, and took almost four days. However when he was done, he had made a cast that could create twenty projectiles at a time.

Will didn't want to start a fire under the church, so he asked Sister Lina if he could use the firepit in the kitchen after breakfast. She agreed just for the fact that she was curious of what he had been working on. Once he finished his meal, he helped Sister Lina clean the bowls and spoons, then hurried into his hole to get everything he needed. He took the iron pot and put in two of the five lead weights he had bought, and hung it over the firepit which was still lit. He added some more firewood and started blowing on the fire. It took longer than he thought to heat up the iron pot, but eventually he saw the lead start to melt. Since the melting point of lead wasn't even a third of the melting point of iron, Will wasn't worried about the iron pot melting as well. Once the lead melted completely, Will grabbed a small stick and scooped up the dirt that was on the surface of the melted lead. He then held the pots handles with some leather gloves he made and poured the lead into the cast that he had placed on the floor. The lead was enough to fill most of the holes, he didn't make too much melted lead to avoid having extra or spilling too much.

Both Will and Sister Lina stared at the cast, waiting for it to cool down. Sister Lina still had no idea what they were waiting for, however her curiosity had her completely mesmerized with the whole process. She had long accepted how smart Will was, she always just assumed he was a freak of nature, but now she wasn't so sure anymore. However she definitely knew he was special, and was glad she had been able to get to know him. After about fifteen minutes, Will grabbed the cast and forcefully opened it. He knocked the wood pieced against the floor to loosen the lead projectiles. He then grabbed his knife and knocked the backside of the blade against the stems on the projectiles to break them off. He took a wet piece of cloth and lightly wiped them, and the end result were sixteen shiny small lemon shaped projectiles. "Wow, they're so pretty! Can I have one?" Sister Lina exclaimed enthusiastically while holding out her hand. Will gave her a confused look, but shrugged and put the smoothest one of the projectiles on her palm. She gleefully held it up against the light coming through the window and stared at it, while spinning it in her fingers.

Will was quite satisfied with the result, and he had plenty of lead left to make more projectiles. It was still early so he decided to give Sister Lina a demonstration. He beckoned her to the back of the church by the outhouse, and took one of the slings out of his back pouch. He looped the string around his finger and held on to the end with the knot between his thumb and index finger. Then he pinched the projectile in the leather pouch of the sling and started spinning it around. He felt the tug of the centrifugal force getting stronger, he did one last rapid spin and released the string. The projectile silently went through the air, until they both heard a heavy thud, and saw splinters flying out from the side of the outhouse. Both Will and Sister Lina ran towards where the bullet hit, and saw a thumb sized hole in the wall. Sister Lina gave Will a stern look. "I'll fix it, I promise." Will said in a panic. He then went into the outhouse and saw the projectile embedded in the opposite wall. He dislodged it from the wall and looked at it, while it had warped slightly, it was still reusable.

Will came out of the outhouse jumping jubilantly due to the success. Sister Lina even started laughing when he started to do a little victory dance.
