Chapter 689 - Warp Travel after the Five Millenia (1)

Several Days Later, Fenran Rex IX, Feris Continent, Icecrown Citadel, On the Command Deck of Executor-class Super Star Destroyer Dreadnought

Generally speaking, travelling between the Star Systems could take many generations of travel, and most human interstellar colonies were isolated outposts established by the crews of generation starships or vessels that made use of suspended animation technology.

The Warp-Drive was one of the most revolutionary inventions in human history. What had once taken many generations of human lives now took only Terran days or weeks.

I still remember the Golden Age of Technology where the Warp Travel was much faster and safer, compared to the scraps of the technology that I managed to get on the Fenran Rex IX.

In approximately the 22nd Millennium, further technological progress led to the creation or the discovery of the human mutant Warp-pilots known as Navigators. These mutants allowed Warp-capable spacecraft to make longer, safer, and more accurate jumps through the Warp, and further accelerated the galaxy's colonisation by humanity.

This lasted until the Warp Storms of the Age of Strife in the 25th Millennium prevented further Warp travel and once more isolated all the human-settled worlds from one another for almost 5,000 Terran years.

Before a starship can enter the Warp, it must first travel at sublight speed to a star system's so-called Mandeville Point. This is the closest distance that a voidship can safely enter or exit Warpspace from its origin or destination system, respectively.

Right now, the Executor-class Super Star Destroyer Dreadnought, which was named as Fenrir's Rage, would be leaving the planet Fenran Rex IX and heading toward the vastness of the galaxy.

Over the past few days, I used Fenrir's Revenge to destroy strategic locations in the Northern Tribal Alliance and in the South, pushing the southerners back to the Stone Age with relative ease.

Currently, the entire South has fallen into a state of very brutal civil war between the Southerners for the remnants of the technology that remained and were not destroyed by me.

"Hold onto the seat... we are going to the atmosphere."

I said to my companion, as the Architect's clone, that was in the control of the Executor-class Super Star Destroyer Dreadnought Fenrir's Rage, did its job, and the ship started rising from the ground and headed toward the stars.

"Activate the Warp-Drive."

The Warp-Drive, which was installed in the Fenrir's Rage, was far better and more advanced than anything that was currently used by the Imperium of Man. It was rather staggering how much humanity has regressed in terms of technological advancement, because they were reduced to a bunch of superstitious fools who were worshipping technology like it was some kind of God.

Plainly stupid.

And rahter ironic.

The Warp-Drive was soon enough activated by the Architect as the entire ship started shaking a bit. This would be the first flight, not to mention, they were going straight through the Warp Storm that was covering the entire region and a bunch of Star Systems.

Once a spacecraft activates its Warp-Drive, it would be plunged into a dimension very different from the material universe. It is convenient to imagine Warpspace as consisting of a relatively dense, almost liquid energy, devoid of stars, light, and life as it is commonly known.

Once within Warpspace, a Warp-capable voidship may move by means of its main reaction drives, following powerful eddies and currents in the Warp, eventually reaching a point in the Empyrean corresponding to a destination in realspace.

Though...

This was just a theoretical basis in the ideal world.

From a distance, one could see how the Executor-class Super Star Destroyer Dreadnought disappeared from the Realspace and entered the Warspace.

"Okey... we are now stabilized and are en route through the Warp Storm... The most difficult aspect of Warp travel is that it is impossible to detect the spatial movement of Warpspace once a ship is in the Warp. The ship can only blindly carry on, its crew trusting that it is going in the right direction. The longer a ship remains in Warpspace, the greater the chances of encountering some unexpected current that can turn it unknowingly off-course."

Travelling through the warp was very dangerous, and sometimes I wondered why nobody in the Solar Terran Federation bothered to invent a new system of FTL, the Faster-Than-Light travel.

Just within the Milky Way Galaxy, there were several methods of Faster-Than-Light Travel, and the most prominent among them was using the Webway and the Dolmen Gate.

The Webway is an extra-dimensional pocket dimension partitioned off from the Immaterium millions of Terran years ago by an extremely advanced xenos species known as the Old Ones that traverses most of the known galaxy and perhaps beyond. Today, it is utilised by the Asuryani of the craftworlds and their Drukhari and Harlequin kindred for faster-than-light travel.

The Dolmen Gate was something like a living stone portal that served as a gate into a portion of the Webway created by the Old Ones. Dolmen Gate technology was first developed by the Necrons with the aid of the C'tan Nyadra'zatha, "the Burning One". With this technology, the Necrons were able to gain a major advantage during the War in Heaven and were finally able to move rapidly through interstellar space without relying on sublight, anti-matter-powered stasis-ships.

This many species of the Federation were able to gather from the Aeldari Empire when the Aeldari Empire was the dominant and prominent power in the Milky Way Galaxy.

Interestingly enough, both of them were pieces of technology that I greatly desired. Even though the Chthonian Empire of the Baator was technologically very well advanced, the technological trees of the Aeldari and Necrons were...

In many regards, eclipsing that of the Chthonian Empire of Baator.

Not to mention, something like Webway and Dolmen Gates would provide an immense advantage to the Kadath Universe, if they were recreated back home, and most importantly, once placed under the control of the Imperial House, it would greatly strengthen our power and control once again.
