The wasteland was a graveyard of grey dirt and shattered stone.
Lin Wan had finally collapsed. She sat slumped against the jagged edge of a massive, weather-beaten boulder. Her breathing was a slow, ragged rattle in the quiet air. The adrenaline of their escape had worn off, leaving behind nothing but the crushing weight of exhaustion. Within minutes, she fell into a deep, dreamless sleep, her staff still clutched tightly in her pale hands.
Fang Lin sat cross-legged a few paces away. His posture was the picture of perfect meditation. To anyone watching, he looked like a weary disciple desperately trying to recover his spent Qi.
But beneath the surface, his mind was a roaring inferno of calculation.
He kept his eyes closed. *If I leave the ruins here, someone else will find them eventually,* he thought, his logic cold and sharp. *If I take it with me, I have a fortress. Simple.*
He didn't mind the biting wind or the grit blowing against his skin. He turned his attention entirely inward, sinking into the dark depths of his own soul.
There, floating in perfect stillness within his Spiritual Sea, was the Ashen Crucible Core Token. He had instantly refined it back in the hidden vault using his newly birthed Four-Pillared Cosmic Force.
The architecture of the Ashen Crucible was exposed to him. It was a tesseract-like geometry of intersecting leylines, spatial anchors, and dimensional folds. He could trace the exact points where the ancient realm was stitched into the fabric of the void.
Fang Lin locked his Peak Mortal Will onto the dimension's anchor points. And then, he pulled.
*Shrink it.*
The command carried the absolute, indisputable weight of the universe's elements.
In the void, the floating continent didn't even have a chance to resist. It simply groaned under the supreme authority of the cosmic energy.
Massive stone pillars snapped cleanly. Giant halls folded neatly in on themselves. Deep, echoing tunnels collapsed in a cascade of silent destruction. The sheer mass of the ruins compressed under the horrifying pressure of his peak Mortal Will.
Fang Lin felt the incredible density pushing back slightly against his mind, a testament to Ou Yezi's ancient forging techniques, but the peak Mortal Will clamped down like a divine vice.
*Shrink.*
With a final surge of his Mortal Will, the resistance shattered.
The mountain range collapsed. It folded over and over again, condensing at terrifying speeds. The massive ruins, the halls, the traps, the untold wealth—it all compacted into a single, glowing sphere.
It was no larger than a glass marble.
Fang Lin didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second. He pulled that impossibly heavy sphere straight toward himself with the illusory arms driven by his peak Mortal Will.
The marble shot out of the void. It crossed the boundary of reality and struck him squarely between the eyebrows.
It didn't break his skin. It simply sank through his skull, slipping past flesh and bone, and plunged directly into his Spiritual Sea, anchoring itself to the Core Token.
A wave of absolute, fiery energy washed over his brain. The sensation of weight was profound. It felt as if a lead anchor had been dropped into the center of his mind.
He had just swallowed a world.
Fang Lin slumped forward slightly, letting out a measured breath.
He had done it.
But before he could even steady his breathing, the real world reacted.
*RUMBLE.*
It started as a low, vibrating growl deep beneath the wasteland dirt. Then, the earth heaved.
A massive earthquake ripped across the dead zone. Ripping an entire pocket dimension out of the local space had violently disrupted the environment. The world was angrily rushing in to fill the empty gap.
Boulders the size of houses shattered into shrapnel. Deep, jagged fissures tore open in the ground, swallowing rocks and dirt. A deafening roar filled the air as a massive cloud of grey dust blasted into the sky, blotting out the already dim light.
"W-What?!"
Lin Wan jolted awake, her scream barely audible over the grinding earth. She scrambled to her feet in a blind panic. Her staff snapped up, her Late Core Formation Qi erupting from her body in a brilliant, defensive flare.
"An ambush?! A beast?!" she yelled, her eyes darting through the choking dust storm.
The ground bucked so violently that she lost her footing, dropping hard to one knee.
Fang Lin stood up. He kept his balance perfectly, his legs absorbing the violent tremors. He looked at the chaos tearing the wasteland apart.
He needed her to believe this was a natural disaster.
"Not beasts, Senior Sister!" Fang Lin shouted, injecting a perfectly calibrated note of panic into his voice. He pointed a finger back toward the empty, churning space where the spatial tear had once been. "The ruins!"
Lin Wan snapped her head around, looking at the epicenter of the quake.
"We barely got out in time!" Fang Lin yelled over the noise. "The collapse of the inner halls must have finally triggered a total chain reaction! The whole pocket dimension just completely imploded!"
Lin Wan's face drained of all color.
She stared at the massive cracks splitting the wasteland. She felt the terrifying aftershocks vibrating through the soles of her boots. The sheer scale of the destruction was undeniable. No human cultivator at their level could cause an earthquake this massive.
She believed him instantly.
"Heavens..." she whispered. Her grip on her staff loosened, the weapon dipping toward the dirt. She looked at Fang Lin, her eyes wide with a mix of absolute awe and raw terror. "If we had stayed inside for even ten more minutes..."
"We'd be dead," Fang Lin finished for her, his voice grim. He walked over, grabbing her arm to help her stand as the ground continued to shudder. "We got the legacy. We got out. That's all that matters now."
Lin Wan nodded rapidly, still visibly shaking. "You're right. You're completely right, Mu Tie. Our luck is terrifying."
Fang Lin simply gave a short, rigid nod.
*My luck is fine,* he thought, his expression perfectly stoic. *Your luck is just standing next to me.*
The earthquake eventually died down. The violent tremors faded into low, distant rumbles, leaving the wasteland heavily scarred. The heavy, poisonous clouds of the Dead Zone rolled low overhead, a thick canopy of dark grey.
"We can't stay here," Lin Wan said, coughing as she waved the dust away from her face. She looked nervously at the horizon. "The noise might attract wasteland scavengers. The blood-hounds will smell the overturned earth. We need to move."
"To the sect?" Fang Lin asked.
"To Black Tortoise Mountain," she confirmed, tightening her grip on her staff. She subconsciously tapped the spatial storage pouch tied to her waist, ensuring the 'mid-tier' forging legacy jade slip they had found was safely secured inside. "It's a grueling eight-day trek from here—four days through the dead zone, and another four just to reach the outer peaks. Once we arrive, I will turn the legacy in for a massive sum of merit points. As promised, we will split the reward, and I will let you study the jade slip once before I hand it over."
"Thank you, Senior Sister," Fang Lin replied, bowing his head slightly.
"Lead the way," he said simply.
The journey began.
It was a brutal, unforgiving trek. The dead zone was a miserable stretch of land. The air here tasted like ash and old, rusted copper. The wind howled without end, throwing sharp, stinging grit into their eyes and cutting at their exposed skin. There was only endless grey dirt, jagged obsidian rocks, and the skeletal, petrified remains of ancient trees that had died centuries ago.
For the entirety of the first four days, they walked in total silence. They kept their heads bowed against the howling wind, putting one foot in front of the other. Astonishingly. they did not find any beasts or monsters enroute.
Lin Wan maintained a thin layer of her Late Core Formation Qi over her skin. It acted as a shield against the biting grit, but it required constant focus and energy. By the time they reached the borders of the Northeastern Highlands, her breathing was heavy, and her steps were sluggish.
Fang Lin didn't bother using a single drop of Qi.
His physical body was already absurdly tough. The wind and the sharp rocks bounced off his skin like rain hitting a steel plate. Furthermore, his Chaos Phantom Extreme Physique passively crushed and filtered the chaotic, poisonous impurities in the air, allowing him to endlessly sustain himself without relying on spirit stones. He simply walked, his mind blank, his focus narrowed down to the pure mechanics of survival.
By the fifth day, the landscape finally began to incline.
The flat, grey dirt gave way to rising slopes of black, jagged stone. They were entering the outer foothills of the Black Tortoise Mountain range. The gravity here felt tangibly heavier, pulling at their muscles.
He didn't complain about the cold. He didn't slow down when his legs burned. He just matched Lin Wan's pace flawlessly, playing the role of the tough, reliable junior brother.
On the afternoon of the eighth day, the clouds finally broke.
Looming in the distance, piercing through the fog, was the massive silhouette of Black Tortoise Mountain. It was breathtaking. It looked exactly like a colossal, slumbering beast carved entirely out of dark stone. The peaks disappeared into the upper atmosphere, and massive, defensive arrays shimmered faintly across its surface.
They were almost there.
As they walked the final stretch toward the sect's outer borders, Fang Lin finally allowed himself a moment to check his internal state. Since swallowing the Ashen Crucible, he had been focused entirely on the journey.
Without breaking his stride, he closed his eyes for a fraction of a second. He sent a thread of his Divine Sense down into his Dantian.
His Dantian was terrifying.
At its core sat the Four-Pillared Cosmic Force, a swirling, ultra-dense vortex of raw, primordial energy. It hummed with absolute stability, suppressing the chaotic elemental impurities of the wasteland with effortless dominance.
But his focus bypassed the swirling cosmic energy and drilled down into the shadows hiding beneath it.
The *Dew of Ten Thousand Shadows* art.
He looked at the vast reservoir of absolute darkness he had painstakingly cultivated over the years. Resting silently in the depths of his foundation were six flawless Midnight Lotuses, containing a staggering sixty thousand drops of compressed shadow essence. Alongside them sat twelve Dark Buds and nearly a hundred raw Shadow Dewdrops.
It was an ocean of darkness.
Because of this massive accumulation, his forbidden skill, the *Night Lotus Bloom*, was always ready to be unleashed.
If he triggered it right now, it was a devastating Area-of-Effect (AoE) shadow explosion.
If he detonated those Midnight Lotuses internally, violently flooding his veins with compressed dark Qi. It would boost his physical speed, raw power, and sensory perception to horrifying, unnatural levels. With his cosmic force stabilizing his meridians, the resulting explosion of power wouldn't tear his body apart—it would simply make him an unstoppable force of destruction.
It was the ultimate trump card. A beautiful, deadly fail-safe.
Fang Lin opened his eyes.
He didn't smile. He didn't change his expression at all. But a deep, cold sense of satisfaction settled heavily in his chest.
*I walked into this wasteland looking for an edge,* he thought, his gaze fixed on the mountain ahead. *I am walking out with an entire fortress in my head, a primordial cosmos in my Dantian, and a peak Mortal Will that can rival even Domain Forging Realm cultivators.*
He looked up at the looming, fortified peaks of Black Tortoise Mountain. The sect was up there. Thousands of disciples. Masters, elders, vast resources, and inevitable enemies.
"Almost there, Mu Tie," Lin Wan said. Her voice was hoarse, her throat dry, but the overwhelming relief in her tone was obvious. "We just need to pass the Outer Gates."
"Alright Senior Sister," Fang Lin replied.
His voice was quiet, instantly swallowed by the howling wind. But his eyes were sharp, cold, and calculating.
He was more than ready.
