Kronos Receiving the Reports
The first report arrived on the morning of the tenth day of month nine: Crius dead. His forces nearly completely destroyed. Approximately ten thousand Covenant warriors killed in the final assault.
The second report arrived in the afternoon: Helios dead. Killed in a deliberate Titan trap at a dimensional gateway that had been designed to explode. Approximately five hundred Covenant warriors killed alongside him.
The third report arrived in the evening: Themis dead. Killed by a demon left behind in the Titan command center. Approximately one hundred Covenant warriors killed in the same assault.
The fourth report arrived the following morning: Phoebe dead. Killed while documenting the conditions of captured Titans. The specific destruction of her documentation meant that the record of the final victories would be incomplete.
The fifth report, arriving in the afternoon of the eleventh day: Coeus dead. He had attempted to negotiate with the Covenant while also managing his own forces. Titan forces that rejected his attempt at negotiation had turned on him and had destroyed him, seeing his negotiation efforts as a betrayal of the Titan cause.
By the time the final report arrived, Kronos had received notification that of the original core Covenant immortals—Kronos, Rhea, Pallas, Helios, Themis, Phoebe—only Kronos and Rhea remained alive.
The other immortals who had joined the Covenant in various capacities throughout the centuries had been killed across the nine months of warfare. Coeus, the Titan immortal who had attempted to negotiate, had been killed by his own side. The Titan immortals were all dead or neutralized.
The war was being won. But the victory was being purchased with the lives of almost every immortal except Kronos and Rhea.
The Moment of Breaking
Kronos received the final reports in a command center that had become almost empty. Most of the staff had been moved to forward positions to coordinate the final assault. Pallas was coordinating forces in the field. Zara was documenting the final phase of the war.
Kronos sat alone in the command center, surrounded by maps showing territories controlled by the Covenant, surrounded by reports of victories achieved, surrounded by the infrastructure of his military victory.
And he broke.
The breaking was not dramatic. It was not accompanied by the kind of rage that produces violence in the moment. The breaking was quiet. It was the specific moment when a being who had held himself to impossible standards for two thousand years confronted the fundamental cost of those standards.
Kronos had spent two thousand years building something based on autonomy and authentic choice. He had spent the last ten months destroying that something in order to save it. In the process of saving it, he had transformed it into something entirely different.
The Covenant was no longer the Covenant that Kronos had founded. The Covenant was now an explicitly military organization that conscripted human populations, that treated refugees as labor resources, that subordinated autonomy to military necessity. The Covenant was winning the war by becoming increasingly like what it opposed.
And all the immortals who had worked alongside Kronos, who had committed themselves to the Covenant's defense, were dead or were ceasing to exist. Helios was dead. Themis was dead. Phoebe was dead. Coeus was dead. Crius was dead. Only Kronos and Rhea remained.
In the moment of confronting that reality, Kronos accessed the power that he had developed but never fully unleashed: the transformation ability that was part of his Force magic. The capacity to change his own physical form, to grow larger, to become a being of immense physical power.
He began to transform.
His body began to shift. His muscles became crystalline structures capable of channeling immense power. His bones became structures capable of supporting weight that would have crushed ordinary matter. His very presence began to warp the space around him.
He grew to four meters tall. Then larger. The transformation continued until Kronos was standing at approximately four and a half meters in height, his body transformed into something that was almost purely destructive potential.
But this was not simple growth. This was transformation born from absolute breaking. Kronos was no longer attempting to be a rational being making calculated decisions. Kronos was becoming something that was almost pure destructive force, manifesting the specific rage of a being who had held himself in check for two thousand years and who had suddenly released the constraint.
Rhea watched from the command center, understanding what was happening. Rhea made no attempt to stop it. Rhea understood that Kronos needed to do something catastrophic in order to process the specific horror of what had been achieved and what had been lost.
Zara, still documenting, recorded the transformation. She recorded Kronos's specific breaking. She documented the moment when the leader of the Covenant revealed the limitation of his rationality.
