Chapter 22 - Act 22: Gas Station of the Dead [I]

Day: 2

Location: Osaka Main Road (Location not yet determined)

Time: 12:54 P.M

Remaining time before Night: 5 hours and 6 minutes left

Everyone unanimously agreed that they would head to the house of Mrs. Haruna to stay for the night and to also evade the Night Rage.

Although unsure if this decision is the right thing, the students have no choice when they are also powerless and tired from all the issues happening.

Once the group has stockpiled what they needed from the ransacked convenience store, the group left in search of a gas station.

"How far do you think we are from the nearest gas station? I doubt there's much gas we can get there. With how mostly in the apocalypse, gas is the most sought-after resource; it's possible they have sucked most of it dry," Souichi struck up the conversation first since everyone was quiet.

"Not too far, Brother. Although it will take a while to reach it, we won't be waiting for hours to arrive there. But it is indeed a problem if the gas has run out there. We might have a few liters of fuel left in the tank, but it won't be long before it runs out." Nanami answered his question while keeping her eyes locked on the screen.

"Still, it is kind of weird that even with a zombie apocalypse, it is oddly quiet, right? I would understand if there were at least one or two of them around, but seeing not a single one around is kind of weird. If there are no zombies, there should be survivors, but both are absent at this point." Souichi looked outside the window if he could spot even one of the nearby zombies that might be hiding.

"True. In a zombie apocalypse, if a zombie is present, it is natural that it would be walking around, but if they are missing, survivors should be nearby. It's kind of creepy if you think about it," Sena agreed with Souichi as well.

"Is there any additional news on the internet, Nanami?" Miyuki asked.

"Local news, nope. International news, I do. It seemed like some of the foreigners have survived and have continued to livestream or record their current situation," Nanami said, showing everyone the screen of a livestream of a man with a few people inside a mansion, with a few people holding weapons.

"Well, they have the advantage. They have a licence to own guns, and even if they didn't have one, local gun stores are public, unlike here in Japan, where it is going to be hard for us to find ways to secure any firearms," Okabe sighed while gripping his weapon tightly.

Mr. Leo, who is listening on the side, decided to give his opinion as well. "It's not like that is the main case here, right? The SDF are some of the soldiers that are capable of defending the public without necessarily needing to use high-caliber guns. And with how fast the SDF can respond in times of emergency, wouldn't the survivors already be evacuated at this point?"

Kyosei sighed and shook his head. "Possibly, but I think it is more accurate to say that they have been overrun by the dead. And instead of thinking about the others, we should be thinking of ourselves. Alright, get ready, people; we are arriving at the gas station now."

The bus slowly halted near the gas station because they couldn't get closer with all the cars cluttered and lined up for gas. Unfortunately, there's no indication these cars will move anytime soon without any of their owners. The cars have been abandoned.

"Looks like we have to manually get the gas ourselves from the gas pump. We can't squeeze the bus further," Mr. Leo said, scratching his head after seeing the congestion of cars.

"It can't be helped. With the apocalypse, people naturally wanted to escape as far as possible from the danger, but with how sudden things were, without even a single warning, this is bound to happen. Alright, we should go and get the tank filled up. Have we brought the jerry can for the gas?" Miyuki asked, looking at Nejima about the whereabouts of the container.

"Yeah. I stuffed it at the back. It should be empty for the time being."

Nejima then pointed towards the back, where the Jerry can is hidden underneath the seat.

"I think it would also be a good idea to grab some gas containers aside from this. That way, we don't need to keep on going to gas stations whenever we need to refill the gas. Some of these cars stuck around might have those jerry cans we needed, and the gas station shop might also have some for sale," Souichi suggested.

"I will move out first. Follow once I give the signal. I saw a few walkers nearby," Kyosei pointed out a few zombies walking not too far from them.

"Good idea. Souichi, I guess you should back up Kyosei for this one." Miyuki looked at Souichi, who nodded in agreement.

But Kyosei stopped them.

"No, you and the others should wait for my signal to gather at the gas station. It's best if you guys search the vehicles and carry any supplies to the bus while I clear the area. That way, we don't need to wait for a while. "

"Guess that's a more efficient way indeed. Kyosei can handle a horde or two even by himself. Let's do just that. We can do much more if we actually divide our work," Souichi agreed.

Miyuki seemed to disagree at first, but Chie patted her on the shoulder and silently shook her head.

Carrying the crowbar, Kyosei disembarked from the bus and navigated his way to the gas station. When he was a bit farther away now, the others also disembarked and started opening the abandoned cars and looking for loot that had been left behind.

Kyosei stayed calm and composed, but his guard remained heightened. With how unusual the zombie apocalypse is, there is always some abnormality that is bound to happen anytime soon, and letting one's guard down can be really fatal.

He was almost at the gas station when Kyosei spotted the horde of zombies gathering around the store. No wonder it is a bit desolate; those guys are gathering nearby. Kyosei called Nanami using the phone since she is the only one he can contact with the phone in his hands. It didn't take long before she picked up.

"Hello? Kyosei?"

"Tell everyone not to come to the gas station just yet. I spotted a horde gathering. I have to clear them out before they can proceed."

"Wait, you don't need backup?"

"No, just keep them far from here."

After Kyosei said that, he gripped the crowbar hard before approaching a nearby metal railing and slamming it to make a noise.

KLANG!

That single noise is enough for all the zombies flocking around the store to look in Kyosei's direction.

Like ants getting attracted to something sweet, the zombies started approaching Kyosei, slowly moving with sudden erratic movements. Their heads and their hands move like they are glitching.

Their limbs twitched abnormally; normal people's bodies don't work the same way.

Just looking at one is already nightmare fuel, but multiple zombies? It is already showing danger. But Kyosei remained calm. Their heads and arms may move erratically, but they are still stuck in the same place, and that is enough for him.

Kyosei did not loosen his grip on the crowbar.

His stance remained firm, and his eyes were locked on the zombies.

As if his music player was matching the situation, a blood-pumping song that Kyosei liked to listen to whenever he fought delinquents came on.

The setup is finally complete.

Kyosei started swinging the crowbar. They have to be broken into pieces.
